Bison netters sweep Kearney Catholic, GICC

KEARNEY -- The McCook High School boys tennis team won 15-of-18 varsity matches Monday afternoon at Kearney. The Bison defeated Kearney Catholic 8-1 and Grand Island Central Catholic 7-2. The sweep followed a third-place finish at the York Invitational Friday. McCook plays at 4 p.m. today at Lexington. McCook opened play Monday by winning 5-of-6 singles matches against Kearney Catholic. Winning varsity singles matches against Kearney Catholic were Jordan Bass, No. 1, 8-0 over Jordan Sievers; Joel Putz, No. 2, 8-2 over Pete Longo; Brad Potthoff, No. 3, over Josh O'Brien; Brandon Crick, No. 4, 8-5 over Alex Bryson; and Harrison Ford, No. 6, 8-1 over Lance Kwietkowski. The Bison's only singles loss came at No. 5 when Brett Burton fell to Jordan Mathe 8-2. McCook swept Nos. 1-3 doubles. Putz-Crick, No. 1, defeated Longo-O'Brien 8-3; Burton-Ford, No. 2, defeated Bryson-Kwietkowski 8-1; and Bass-Potthoff, No. 3, defeated Sievers-Mathe 8-2. Winning junior varsity singles matches for McCook were Aaron Nix, 6-1 over David O'Neill; and Andrew Howell, 6-0 over Eric Carranza. Nix and Howell teamed up to win two doubles matches, 6-0 and 6-3. "Besides the lone loss, there was only close match," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers. "The guys picked up where they left off last week at York and played great. "We knew this was going to be one of the toughest stretches on our schedule and so far they have met the challenge. "I have been impressed with the determination of the team and the confidence they are playing with. I told the team to use our first duel as a momentum builder for GICC." Winning varsity singles matches against GICC were Bass, No. 1, 8-2 over Ryan Kellogg; Putz, No. 2, 8-1 over Chris Northrup; Crick, No. 4, 8-2 over Tom Bennett; Burton, No. 5, 8-4 over Kenny Howard; and Ford, No. 6, over Brad Kulus. Brad Potthoff, at No. 3 singles, lost to Kurt Johnson 8-4. Winning varsity doubles matches against GICC were Putz-Crick, No. 1, 8-5 over Johnson-Northrup; and Bass-Potthoff, No. 3, 8-3 over Kulus- Kellogg. Burton-Ford, at No. 2 doubles, lost to Bennett-Howard 8-5. In junior varsity singles play, Nix defeated Kearney Catholic's Victor Ryan 6-3. "This was the first time we have beaten GICC since any of us have been a part of Bison tennis," Wiemers said. "GICC traditionally has a solid team and are regular contenders for the state title. "This was a huge win and a confidence builder for the team. I am so pleased with the level of tennis we are playing." The duo of Ford and Burton posted a 4-1 record and captured the No. 2 doubles division Friday at the York Invitational. They defeated teams from Waverly, Elkhorn, Nebraska City and Holdrege and lost to a duo from York. Bass placed second at No. 1 singles with a 4-1 record. He defeated players from Waverly, Nebraska City, York and Holdrege and lost to an Elkhorn player. Potthoff finished as the second-place medalist at No. 2 singles with a 4- 1 record. He defeated players from Waverly, Elkhorn, Nebraska City and Holdrege and lost to a player from York. The No. 1 doubles team of Putz and Crick posted a 1-4 record. They defeated a doubles team from Nebraska City.
