ARAPAHOE -- Jay C. Hauxwell, 90, died Thursday (Dec. 20, 2001) at his home in Arapahoe.
He was born May 13, 1911 near the Willow Creek in Red Willow County to Rue and Angeline Janette Hauxwell. The family attended church at Box Elder which later became part of the Indianola Church of Christ where he was baptized as a teenager.
On June 6, 1937, he married Mildred Arlene Stewart at Bartley. They farmed near the home place on the Willow Creek and moved to a farm southwest of McCook in 1942. In 1961 they moved to McCook. They returned to the country south of McCook in 1970 where they operated the Hauxwell Garden Market.
He served on the Red Willow County Weed District Board; was active in the Soil Conservation Service and on the District No. 30 School Board.
He was active in the church where he served as an elder, Sunday School Superintendent and was instrumental in the birth and growth of the McCook Christian Church in 1963.
Mildred preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 1980 and he married Selma Carskadon on Jan. 13, 1980, in Arapahoe. They lived in Arapahoe where he worked with the Arapahoe Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mildred; two brothers, Lawrence and Clifford; four sisters, Violet, Hazelle Emrich, Annie and Phyllis; and one granddaughter, Kathy Hauxwell Emrich.
Survivors include his wife, Selma Hauxwell of Arapahoe; one daughter, Jane and husband, Dale Heimer of McCook; five sons, Wayne Hauxwell of Cambridge, Richard Hauxwell, Douglas Hauxwell and Neal Hauxwell, all of McCook; and Ronald Hauxwell of Lincoln; two step-children, Linda and husband, Sam Schutte of Malcom and Lee Carskadon of Edison; one sister, June and husband, Fred Mustion of Culbertson; 17 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Sunday, 2 p.m., at the Arapahoe Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be Monday, 10 a.m., at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
Visitation is today, 9 a.m.-noon and Sunday, 2-8 p.m. Memorials are requested in lieu of flowers.
