Eugene Carl Steinke
WAUNETA -- Eugene Carl Steinke, 85, died Monday (Jan. 15, 2002) at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.
He was born Nov. 28, 1916, south of Trenton to Carl and Mary (Raymond) Steinke. He attended school through the eighth grade and worked with his father on the farm.
On July 31, 1937, he married Mildred Violet Newport near Trenton. He worked for several ranchers and farmers south of Trenton. Later, the family moved to the Sandhills region of Nebraska, where they lived for a short time before returning to Southwest Nebraska. They lived south of Wauneta where he was again employed by ranchers and farmers as a hand. Following the death of their only son, Charles, they moved into Wauneta. He was then employed by a local auto dealer, retiring in 1977.
Mildred preceded him in death in 1989 and he married Betty Purdy in 1991
Survivors include two daughters, Merna Lagerman and husband, Robert of Las Vegas, Nev., and Faustine Hakenkamp and husband, Eugene of North Platte; five sisters, Leila Gillaspie of Las Vegas, Pearle Daugherty of Love Lock, Nev., Iva Schnabel and Norma Martinez, both of Denver, Colo., and Irene Stroebel-Stover of McCook; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, 1:00 p.m. MST, at United Methodist Church of Wauneta with the Rev. Michael Laing officiating. Interment will follow at the Trenton Cemetery in Trenton.
Visitation will be Monday, 10 a.m., at Liewer Funeral Home of Wauneta.
A memorial has been established in his name.
