Andrew 'Andy' B. Schmid

HAYS, Kan. -- Andrew "Andy" B. Schmid, 72, died Tuesday (April 9, 2002) in Hays, Kan.

He was born Oct. 1, 1929, to Martin and Eva Marie (Haller) Schmid on the family farm Northeast of Atwood. He attended country schools and graduated from Atwood High School in 1948.

On April 25, 1959, he married Mary Ellen Jackson. The couple made their home in Rawlins County, moving to Colby, Kan., in 1977 and to Hays in 1989. He was a retired mechanic.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Jim, Paul, Frank, Fred, John, Charles and Louis; three sisters, Annie, Theresa and Katherine; and one son, Brian Andrew in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Hays; two sons, Mark and wife, Pat of Hays and Bernard and wife, Dana of Colby; one daughter, Diane Schmid of Great Bend; three sisters, Laura and husband, Bill Hogan of Stoneham, Mass., Verneda Rippe and Agnes Barenberg of Atwood; one brother, Joe and wife, Lottie of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with the Rev. Damian Richards officiating. Interment will be at Atwood Fairview Cemetery.

The parish vigil and rosary is today at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given in his name and left at Williams Funeral Home in Atwood.

Visitation is today until 9 p.m., at the funeral home.
