Velma Evangeline Jeffus
OBERLIN -- Velma Evangeline Jeffus, 94, died Tuesday (May 7, 2002) at Decatur County Good Samaritan in Oberlin.
She was born Sept. 29, 1907, to Alva Dana and Anna Nora (Henderson) Megown in Sedalia, Mo. She was raised in Missouri, Wyoming and California.
On Feb. 21, 1923, she married Allen Levelle Jeffus in El Centro, Calif. The couple spent time in Brawley, Calif. and Puyallup, Wash., before moving to Oberlin. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the United Church of Oberlin, J.C.C. Club, Silver Haired Legislature, Oberlin Library Board, Hospice of Decatur County, Garden Club, and Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 6.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; daughter, Phyllis Hershman; brother, A.D. Megown, Jr; sister, Meha Elizabeth Nisson; son-in-law, Charles Young; and one great-grandson.
Survivors include one son, Allen W. Jeffus and wife, Neta of Topeka, Kan.; three daughters, Eleanor and husband, Cotty Matal of Woodland, Calif., Barbara Young of Oberlin and JuDee and husband, Bill Benton of Merced, Calif.; son-in-law, Frank Hershman of Loveland, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Mike McVay officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
Visitation is Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. The casket will remain closed.
Memorials may be given in her name to the Decatur County Good Samaritan Center.
