James 'Jim' R. Short
James "Jim" R. Short, 78, died Friday (Dec. 6, 2002) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.
He was born April 20, 1924, at Titus, Ala., to Jessie B. and Ethel E. (Gantt) Short. In 1943, he graduated from Wetumpka High School, Wetumpka, Ala.
On Feb. 5, 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Air Force and was stationed at the McCook Air Base. He was later transferred to the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 21, 1946.
On May 16, 1946, he married Alma Mae Hanke at McCook. He served as Red Willow County Sheriff for more than 33 years. He retired in 1989.
He was a member of the Nebraska Sheriff's and Peace Officers Association of which he served as vice-president and president. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended First Baptist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Jessie and Ethel Short; and one sister, Mary Bolden.
Survivors include his wife, Mae Short of McCook; two daughters, Karen and husband, Lynn Salyer of McCook and Donna Short of Lincoln; one brother, John Short and wife, Lee, of Grayson, La.; brother-in-law, Gene Bolden of Millbrook, Ala.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m., at First Baptist Church in McCook with the Rev. Stan Hendershot and the Rev. Jim Denny officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday until noon and Sunday 3 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Memorials may be given in his name.
