New 'Big Buffalo Nickel' means business
As a special added attraction, a number of Gazette subscribers this week are receiving the premiere issue of a full-size shopper's guide called the "Big Buffalo Nickel."
It was inserted into thousands of carrier-delivered newspapers today and is also available free in 57 news racks throughout the Golden Plains of Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas.
The best part -- for shoppers -- is that the Big Nickel is packed with special prices on cars, farm equipment, satellite television systems, real estate, doors, windows, antique tractor parts and many, many other items. In addition, Big Nickel readers will find out about special dining experiences, upcoming events and area-wide auctions.
The 10-page, broadsheet edition features 45 separate display advertisements and 38 want ads offering a variety of products and services.
The premiere shopper's guide begins with the introduction of "Buffy," a rip-snorting Buffalo who has been named the new mascot for the Big Buffalo Nickel. In a front page announcement in the Big Nickel, readers and advertisers are told, "Buffy Means Business." Following up on that pledge, the Big Buffalo Nickel will share secrets for shopping and selling success in each week's issue.
Photographs provide another added dimension to the Big Buffalo Nickel. Three members of the Gazette staff -- Connie Jo Discoe, Bill Coe and Shary Skiles -- shared 12 of their pictures for this week's edition. In coming weeks, readers from far and near are invited to send their pictures for use in the Big Buffalo Nickel at no charge to the reader.
Photos may be dropped off at the Gazette office at West First and E streets in McCook, or the snapshots may be sent to: Big Nickel Pictures, c/o McCook Daily Gazette, P.O. Box 1268, McCook, NE 69001. The photos will be returned following use.
The Buffalo Nickel has been around for 11 years, starting in 1991 as a tabloid size publication. Conceived and named by Steve Walker of McCook, the publication continued in the smaller size until being expanded to broadsheet (a full-size newspaper page) in today's issue.
The new Big Nickel offers the best prices on advertising in the Golden Plains thanks to a special $1-$2-$3 rate plan introduced this month. For more information, all who offer products or services to the public are encouraged to call the Gazette advertising staff at (308) 345-4500. Standing ready to assist you with both Big Nickel and Gazette advertising are the ad manager, Butch Mires, and an experienced staff of five account executives: Bill Coe, Donna Houghtelling, Penny Johnson, Shellie Winder and LaVonne Clapp.
