Councillor speaks
Dear Editor:
I am very impressed with the knowledge that so many critics have of the operation of diesel engines. Having spent most of my adult life owning or operating these engines I feel it most necessary to share some of that experience with you.
It is correct that these engines are most definitely in need of being warm before they are driven. It is also correct that if not ventilated properly the exhaust would become irritating. I believe that this is the reason that our fire and rescue equipment is kept in a well heated garage area. I believe that new heating units were recently purchased to keep this equipment warm. I am also aware that a great deal of aftermarket heating systems are available for installation on each of these pieces of equipment that will serve the same principal. For example; Heated oil plugs can be installed during the regular service of the oil for around $100 a piece. This would allow the equipment to roll out the door at operating temperature 24 hours a day without ever needing to warm the vehicle up. If this system were installed on 10 vehicles you are looking at $1,000. Now add on the cost of some electrical extensions ( lets say $2,000 ) and we come up with a price of approximately $3,500. If my math is correct this is a $20,000 savings to the already overtaxed payer, and a relief to the occupants of the safety center. Don't make the mistake of thinking that your council members are not knowledgeable. The statement that was made at the council meeting to Chief Harpham was to bring the council some alternative systems. But some people again chose to have selective hearing and write unfounded statements in this column. The council rejected the method, not the idea. If you have trouble believing what you read about the actions of this council, I again ask that you attend the meetings or speak with your council members directly. They are all at your disposal.
