Danbury entry wins local contest

Wednesday, September 18, 2002

Jamie Helm of Danbury won the tie-breaker with 35 points to beat two other Power Points entries with 94 points to win $25 in the local contest and a chance to win $100 in the Grand Bowl Guess Off at the end of the year.

We're only two weeks into the new football season and already the surprises are mounting up. Super Bowl champion St. Louis is winless, Carolina already has doubled its wins of a year ago, Denver has whipped arguably the two best teams in the league -- St. Louis and San Francisco -- after a disappointing finish last year and Detroit is winless after two games. Oh, well, not everything is a shock.

Surprising, too, were the poor scores in Week 2 of the Power Points of the Midlands Football Contest.  Normally the upset bug doesn't strike until a month or so into the season.

But in Week 2, most local winning scores were actually in double digits. Still, a winner did emerge and that winner is Irvin Hans, of Salina, Kan. He tallied a region-high 113 of the possible 136 points. Not enough to win very often, but it was enough in Week 2 to take home first place honors and the weekly cash prize of $1,000.

He entered the contest through the Salina Journal.
