Mopping up

Thursday, April 24, 2003

A McCook City Firefighter watches for more signs of fire in a plastic bucket that caught fire in the basement at Memorial United Methodist Church, 105 East E, on Wednesday. Fire Chief Marc Harpham said a mop head caught fire in the process of an old furnace being removed at the church. People working on the furnace thought they had put the fire out and placed the mop heads in a plastic bucket and into a bathroom. Later on in the morning, it was discovered that the fire had rekindled and the bathroom was full of smoke. There was minimal smoke damage to the church, he said.
