Lila P. Shafer
Lila P. Shafer, 78, formerly of Nebraska City, died Monday (May 19, 2003) at Community Hospital of McCook.
She was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Rulo, to Dewey E. and Leah E. (Ely) Zimmerman.
In 1943 she married Leonard Smalley at Nebraska City. To this union three children were born.
in 1975, she married Raymond Jack Shafer in Nebraska City. She worked at the former Morton House Kitchens in Nebraska City. She also worked at the former Woolworths as a sales clerk. She had lived in McCook for nearly a year to be closer to her children.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Nebraska City and the Eagles and American Legion Auxiliaries.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; a son, Lawrence D. Smalley; one brother, Virgil Zimmerman; and two infant twin sisters.
Survivors include a son, Lyle Smalley and wife, Peg of McCook; daughter, Leah and husband, Larry Rakes of McCook; step-son, Kenneth Shafer and wife, Cathy of Memphis, Tenn.; step-daughter, Frances and husband, Joe Moyer of Shenandoah, Iowa; a brother, Marvin Zimmerman and wife, Lorene of Nebraska City; sister-in-law, Doris Zimmerman of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at the Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City with the Rev. Jerry Albright of the First Christian Church in Nebraska City officiating.
Visitation is after 3 p.m. today and Wednesday until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Nebraska City.
Memorials may be given in her name to the American Heart Association.
