Tire cleanup set Aug. 25-30

Thursday, August 7, 2003

With the expense of getting rid of used tires on the rise, many people in Southwest Nebraska are wondering what to do with their old tires scattered around in the back yard.

The city of McCook and the state of Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality are sponsoring a regional tire cleanup to help area residents dispose of the eyesores.

The free collection is scheduled for Aug. 25-30 at the McCook Transfer Station between the hours of 8 a.m., and 3 p.m.

A maximum of 500 tons has been approved for the McCook site. Only tires from residents of Dundy, Hitchcock, Red Willow, Furnas, Chase, Hayes and Frontier counties are being accepted. The tires are being taken on a first come-first serve basis. The tire cleanup will end when the maximum quantity has been reached.

Tire retailers are excluded from the cleanup. Tires with rims will not be accepted.

The tire cleanup is made possible through a Scrap Tire Cleanup Grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.

For more information, call the McCook Transfer Station at (308) 345-7049.
