Ice cream man

MOOREFIELD -- The ice cream man loves to watch the faces of the kids when they hear the music from his cart and see him coming down the street.

"It's fun to meet the kids," said ice cream man Floyd Smith of Moorefield. "I like to see their faces light up when they see me coming."

A while back, Floyd came across the insulated cart his son had invented and from which Floyd sold hot tamales in Denver, before moving to Moorefield four years ago. "I had forgotten it was in there," Floyd said. He did some thinking, found out where he could buy dry ice, got permits and permission from city hall officials, and turned the little push-cart into an ice cream cart.

Floyd sells ice cream products now in Gothenburg, Eustis, Farnam, Moorefield, Curtis, Maywood and even McCook.

Floyd said his customers' favorite ice cream product seems to be the M&M frozen sandwich cookie, and anything with real ice cream. Freezer pops are popular with the kids.

Floyd, retired now for 10-15 years, says pushing the cart helps keep him physically fit. "I love ice cream too," he laughed. He chuckled, "Oh, I eat my share ... I eat my profits."
