South blanks North 24-0

LINCOLN (AP) -- Make it 14-0 for McCook High School graduates Krae Dutoit, Stuart Frazier and Ben Klug as well as head football coach Jeff Gross.

The McCook representatives, who helped lead the Bison to a Class B state championship and a 13-0 record during the 2002 season, helped the South team pull off a 24-0 victory Saturday in the 45th annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl Football Classic.

Lincoln Southeast graduate Andy Birkel scored two touchdowns -- off an 86-yard interception return and a 32-yard reception. Birkel's scoring pass was from Jordan Gaillard of Omaha Gross.

The South's other touchdown came on a three-yard run by Crete's Bryan Florendo, who led all rushers with 110 yards on 20 carries and was named the game's offensive Most Valuable Player.

Besides making all the point-after kicks for the South, Andy Severson of Bellevue West also added a 51-yard field goal.

Dutoit, the South captain, played the majority of the game at quarterback for the South. He completed 5-of-8 passes for 45 yards. Frazier started at fullback and rushed for 32 yards on 8 carries.

Elkhorn's Jordan Brill led the North with 138 passing yards. He completed 10 of 19 passes and threw two interceptions.

Gross was an assistant coach for the South team and coached the defense. One of his defensive standouts was Klug, who started at cornerback.
