McCook's No. 1 tennis duo playing for state medals today
(High School Sports ~ 10/18/24)
LINCOLN, Neb. — McCook’s No. 1 doubles Reid Loop and Aaron Frank are playing for Class B state medals today as the Bison finish at Lincoln’s Woods Tennis Center. The Bison brought five first-time state players where they’ve been within striking range of a top 10 team place. A Loop-Frank victory in their seventh-place match would at least add to McCook’s current 10-point team total. The No. 1 duo advanced with two big wins on Thursday, including a 6-0, 7-5 surprise over Kearney Catholic’s No. 7 state-seeded Will Hogeland and Nash Malone. The Stars were 23-10, but Loop-Frank improved their record to 23-11. The Bison had swept Alliance, 8-0, in their opening state match. Loop-Frank reached quarterfinal play where they ran into No. 2 Nicholas Phelan and Francis Dawson from Lincoln Pius X. These Thunderbolts were able to zap a 6-0, 6-2 roadblock on McCook’s state run. They dropped a narrow 8-6 decision this morning in consolation play vs. Scottsbluff No. 11 seeds Matthew Hafner and Escamilla Venzor, who are now 29-12. So the Bison finale will be against Waverly No. 4-seed Isaac Clarke and Chase McInteer. They brought a 30-10 record into ‘B’ state. Other McCook state players were senior No. 1 singles Max Proehl. He dropped an 8-2 match with Gretna No. 10-seed Brandtley Hack. No. 2 singles Tysen Baker posted an overall winning record but lost a 9-8 grinder to Elkhorn Antler John Karnett with a 7 to 5 tie-breaker. McCook’s No. 2 doubles team of seniors Landon Kmoch and Sutton LaBrie brought a No. 9 seed into state. They won 8-0 over Cornerstone Christian before falling to No. 8 Grand Island Central Catholic. More details to come.
