Underwriters Laboratories estimates 20 percent of homes have smoke detectors that do not work and two-thirds of deaths stemming from residential fires occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Statistics such as these prompted the McCook Fire Department to prioritize proper use and maintenance of smoke detectors this year during Fire Prevention Month.

A plea agreement was reached last week with a McCook man charged with felony possession of illegal drugs stemming from his arrest in June at the parking lot between the City of McCook swimming pool and the McCook Community College events center.
