--- Three students and a passer-by at the McCook Community College Student Union (aka the Wigwam) reacted to the results of Tuesday night's election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. Obama, Deocratic Senator from Illinois, defeated John McCain, Republican Senator from Arizona, with an electoral college tally of 349-163 pending the outcome of close races in North Carolina and Missouri still too close to call...

After dealing successfully with wide-open offenses the past two weeks (wins over Ogallala and Columbus), the top-ranked McCook Bison will get tested by the Schuyler Warriors' "Stack I" offense Friday night in a Nebraska Class B football quarterfinal playoff game...

OBERLIN -- Three Decatur Community High School volleyball players have been selected to the Northwest Kansas All-League volleyball team this year. The NWKL coaches selected Adrienne Pauls, Jordan Dreher and Elisha Jones.

GRAND ISLAND -- The McCook YMCA Swim Team attended their first meet of the 2008-09 winter swim season in Grand Island on Sunday. With teams from Grand Island, Hastings and McCook, the meet included more than 100 swimmers with 374 entries. McCook's Jamie Soderlund was a triple winner for the team with firsts in the girls 13-14 50-meter freestyle, girls 13-14 100-meter backstroke and girls 13-14 100-meter freestyle...

Hair styles have been all the rage, they've gone out of style and come back again, during the 45 years that Harry Lebsack has cut hair in McCook. "Flat tops were popular with the kids in '63," Harry said Thursday, Oct. 30, his last day as a professional barber before his retirement. "Hair styles go out, and they come back around." The long styles of the '60s and '70s? -- "We just watched 'em walk by," he chuckled...

Name a big project, and you'll always find its detractors. The proposed four-lane link between Interstate 70 and Interstate 80 is no moon shot, but it's already drawing discussion. It will bring more business to McCook. It will allow traffic to bypass McCook altogether. It's a highway to nowhere. It's needed to keep McCook competitive...

A good time was had by all. That would probably be the best way to describe the experience of those who gathered in front of the high school grandstand to participate in the annual Great Worldwide Star Count on Thursday evening, Oct. 30. They couldn't have asked for a better evening. ...
