Feb. 21, 1926 - Aug. 7, 2008 PALISADE -- DeWinta Grace "Pretty Lady" McDowell died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008 at her home in Palisade, Neb., at the age of 82. She was born Feb. 21, 1926, in McCook, Neb., the daughter of the late Elzy and Grace (Hayward) McDowell. She was baptized and confirmed in the Congregational, Church in Hayes Center, Neb. The family farmed in Hayes Center where she grew up and graduated from the Hayes Center High School in 1945...

It's frustrating when there's a plan in place to deal with an issue and we encounter those who aren't willing to make the sacrifices to see it through. Imagine if Winston Churchill had said "we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; ... oh, never mind."...

The Olympics are looming -- as NBC won't stop reminding us -- but honestly, I can't work up much enthusiasm. And I remember when the Olympics actually mattered to a non-Olympic sports fan such as myself. Granted, I'm still a young man, I suppose, but it wasn't that long ago when Olympic coverage was, in fact, great television...

I sort of always had this concept of self-esteem as a warm, fuzzy feeling deep inside oneself. I heard the term and it triggered images of people hugging themselves and saying, "I love me!" If I didn't perceive self-esteem as some ridiculously gushy emotion towards the self, I saw it as mere vanity and snobbery...
