'Friends of the River' need to get a grip

It comes as no surprise that our State Supreme Court has declined to consider the lawsuit filed by the coalition "Friends of the River" ("Friends"), who allege our state constitution is being violated by the property tax provisions in LB701. Why would the high court want to jump in on this controversy? In their view, let one or more local county district courts wrestle with the thing, and then maybe in a couple of years the supremes will have the final say on the matter...

Obituary Barbara Arville Daffer May 6, 1922 - Nov. 1, 2007 Barbara Arville Daffer, 85 of Wilber died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln. She was born May 6, 1922, in Ponca City, Okla., to Robert and Ruth (Mills) Burwell. She attended school in Danbury and lived there most of her life. Barbara had lived in Wilber the last four years. She loved her family, helping children, cooking, sewing, flowers especially lilacs and gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Sandra Anderson, and brothers and sisters, Earl Burwell, Leonard Burwell, Pearl (Burwell) Hart and Billy Burwell. Survivors include two sons, Curt Burgess and wife, Cathy of Riverside, Calif., and Ronald Burgess and wife, Elizabeth of San Francisco, Calif.; brother and sisters, Clifton Burwell and wife, Ginette in North Ridge, Calif.; Delores Bailey Burwell in Ellisville, Mo., and Darlene Lostis and husband, Bill in Joplin, Mo.; a son-in-law, Lonnie Anderson and wife, Peg of McCook; seven grandchildren, Tara Dunn of Lincoln, Nicole Geisinger and husband, Paul of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Christine Matheny and husband, Paul of Junction City, Kan., Branwen and Megan Burgess, both of San Francisco, Calif., Joseph and Jacob Burgess, both of San Francisco, Calif.; one great-granddaughter, Savanah Dunn; and one great-grandson, Randy Matheny. Memorials may be given in her name. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m., at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
