Another top production for SWNCTA
(Editorial ~ 03/19/07)
It was another remarkable effort by Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association, as Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" took the stage Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. An attorney (Maury Green) as a mobster and an elementary school principal (Kathy Latta) as what one reviewer called a "trollop" are typical of the humorous irony possible in community theater production, and both of them played it to the hilt. ...

Feeding America
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/19/07)
Where does your food come from? If you're like many Americans, the answer is the grocery store. And frankly, that disturbs me. The grocery store isn't where food comes from -- it's just from where it's distributed. In reality, far too many people are unaware of the role of American agriculture in their daily lives ... and what it really takes to have food on their dinner table...

Extra hour myth
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/19/07)
As a former Meteorology major I feel I have to set the record straight on the "extra hour of sunlight" myth. Regardless of what time you have your clocks set in the winter/spring the sun shines for 12 hours. You don't get an extra hour of daylight, you get an extra hour of work. At this time of year we are receiving almost 12 hours of sunlight...

Play went too far
(Letter to the Editor ~ 03/19/07)
A short note to inform you we will not be attending any more of the Community Theaters productions unless we can be assured that the moral content of the production will be on a higher plane. The cuss words were unnecessary but the scene on forgiveness was very offensive. True forgiveness comes from the heart and is not some light flippant thing. This scene made a mockery of the forgiveness that God gives to us when we accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior...

Remembering the McCook Packing Plant
(Column ~ 03/19/07)
In the 21st Century the way America buys its meat has changed dramatically. There was a time when every town had its share of "Butcher Shops" (independent meat stores). These operations had their own small slaughter houses, which supplied the animals for their retail meat business. Federal regulations and intense competition from large packing plants have made these "Mom and Pop" operations increasingly rare...
