March 14, 1916-Sept. 7, 2006 CAMBRIDGE -- Paul Leo "Pete" Arthaud, 90, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2006), at McCook Community Hospital.  He was born On March 14, 1916, in Cambridge, to Henry and Mary (Hougnon) Arthaud.  He attended school in Cambridge, graduating from Cambridge High School in 1933.   He then attended the University of Nebraska where he completed a farm operations course...

OMAHA -- A McCook company has been fined and placed on probation following a conviction in U.S. District Court for violating federal export licensing requirements. On Sept. 7, the Honorable Richard Kopf ordered Springer Magrath Co., in the 400 block of West B, to pay a fine of $50,000, complete three years probation and pay a $400 special assessment for exporting electric cattle prods to South Africa without first having obtained a license required by federal law...

Nebraskans are committed to education. The majority of our property tax bill goes toward maintaining public schools. Almost a third of us, 29 percent, ages 25 to 65, hold bachelors degrees or higher, compared to 23 percent of us 14 years ago. But that dream of higher education and all the benefits it brings are becoming more and more expensive, according to the National Center for Public Policy in Higher Education...

I'd like to comment on Brian T. Osborn's latest political rant. Like most liberal pacifists, and (as) the Democratic chair of Phelps County, he also claims to support our troops. And he uses the old "I support the troops but not the war" quote so popular among liberals. And like clockwork, he follows that up with the old "blame Bush" routine...

The McCook Bison varsity softball team held off a feisty Gothenburg Swedes team 3-0 Thursday at Jaycee Sports Complex. McCook (10-2) scored one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth against Gothenburg (5-2). The McCook High School volleyball varsity team dropped matches to Grand Island Northwest and Holdrege Thursday night at the MHS gymnasium. McCook lost to GINW 25-21, 25-6 and Holdrege 25-14, 25-11. In the GINW match, Erica Clapp had 1 ace serve. Lindsey Hazlitt had 5 kills. Clapp had 9 set assists and Hazlitt 3. Hazlitt and Sam Brown each had 1 block. IMPERIAL -- The Dundy County boys and Ogallala girls captured the team titles at the Chase County-Imperial Invitational cross country meet Thursday. The meet took place at the Imperial Country Club. The Dundy County boys placed three runners in the top 10, four in the top 15 and scored 21 points.
