Someone correct me if I am wrong, but has our current school board gone insane? My facts may not be exactly correct but I believe they are close. Two weeks ago the board voted to purchase a computer program at a cost of nearly $100,000 so the parents of students could keep a closer look on the development and achievements of their children. What happened to parents meeting with teachers every 6 weeks? Diane Lyons was the only member who voted against this...

I had a nightmare last night. Bill Gates asked the City Council for approval to give $100 and Mom's apple pie to everyone in McCook who had a mother. Phil Lyons voted against the free money and apple pie. His reason was that Gates' offer did not provide for the money to be paid by "certified check" and in all the books he had read about his heroes, he could find no evidence that Sen. Norris or JFK ever ate Mom's apple pie...

Taking the soda out of schools

Ten items or less: While I fully support the removal of pop from schools, I have to wonder if it's going to create a desire for something they can't have. For example, I don't forbid pop in my house. We simply don't have it around because there are better, cheaper things to drink -- such as water. We occasionally have a 12-pack of root beer in the basement in case of root beer float emergencies, but that's only when the pop is on sale...

An elephant in Max

Pat Bellamy of Max puts a fresh coat of paint on her elephant -- an uncommon lawn ornament on the Golden Plains of Nebraska. Pat said the elephant "just got left here" when her step-granddaughter moved from Benkelman. Now, as Pat and her husband, Bob, plan to move to Valley to be closer to their children in Omaha and Elkhorn, Pat said she has to decide whether to take the elephant with them, sell it at their auction or "just leave it" for someone else to repaint in a couple years...
