I used to hear the title of today's column or a derivation of the title used as a descriptive phrase a lot when I was growing up. If a teacher was "getting on" a student, someone would say that student was "really catching the dickens." I occasionally heard my relatives talk about some married man who stayed out too late or did something he shouldn't have done and that he "really caught the dickens" when he got home. ...
