McCook was the envy of the state of Nebraska in 1960 because of its outstanding YMCA At that time McCook was the smallest city in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Wyoming that had a Young Men's Christian Association facility. The membership had tripled since 1957 and stood at 690 youths, 220 adults plus 100 short-term members. McCook had larger memberships than did Beatrice, Grand Island, Scottsbluff or Hastings. Columbus had put up a new Y in 1959 for about $700,000 and had only 377 members...
