Now that the main lanes of the mid-town highway construction project have been put in place, the merchants of McCook can start planning a major coming-out party. Yes -- at long last -- it's time for a "Retail Revival" in McCook. Hit hard by the drought, the post 9-11 slowdown and the dollar drain to the Wal-Mart Superstore, McCook retailers have been in a holding pattern for the past few years. ...

Dear Editor, The removal of the stone with the Ten Commandments from the court house has a lot more ramifications than just the separation of church and state. The Ten Commandments are more than the law. They are instructions for a set of ethics and morality. We can remove the stone with the Ten Commandments from the courthouse, but if we remove ethics and morality from the courthouse, then we will never be able to pass enough laws to maintain any semblance of civility within our country...

Soldiers lose belongings in fire

A McCook mother who would want someone to help her son if he were in the same situation wants to send "care packages" to a team of American Army Reserve soldiers who lost all their belongings in a tent fire in the deserts of Iraq. Sue Beebe's son, Jeromy, serves with the soldiers victimized by the fire in early September, and her heart goes out to the soldiers thousands of miles from home, sifting through the smoldering remains of the rifles and body armor that protected them from the enemy and the personal belongings that connected them to life back home.. ...

McCOOK--The McCook Indians volleyball team wrapped up three nights of volleyball with a 30-15, 30-27, 30-25 loss at home to Central Community College Wednesday night. The game marked a homecoming for McCook native Jessica Allberry, a freshman outside hitter for Central CC-Columbus. Allberry's Raiders didn't give McCook a chance by jumping out to a 10- point lead in the first game and never looking back.
