It was sad to hear of the closing of the Quality Farms stores in Nebraska, including the one on North U.S. Highway 83 in McCook. Formerly called Country General, it will forever be remembered as "Wheelers" to those of us who grew up in the area -- directions to a rural garage sale will most often use "Wheelers" as a landmark...

Will get license number

Thanks to the one who came on Tuesday to pick up trash on South Street after picking it up on Monday. A man and a woman in a blue pickup stopped and jammed our large metal trash container so full the lid wouldn't close. I had just been out and put in a pizza box and a small garbage bag, so the container was almost empty. These people don't live in our neighborhood and this isn't the first time this has happened. Next time I will get a license plate number...

No room for appeal

With regard to the water lawsuit, after reading the judge's decision, it seems to me like the individuals who drew up the contract made sure that there was no way out for the city. Who were they actually representing? It is my opinion that the judge reviewed every detail and left no room for an appeal...

Living life at ground zero

I grew up during the Cold War. I was one of those little second-graders who were taught to "duck and cover." We had those drills more often than fire drills, or so it seemed to me. I have vague memories of the Cuban missile crisis, recalling only the heightened tensions, and none of the details. As time went by we apparently felt more secure, and I don't remember any civil defense drills at all after the fifth or sixth grade...

She was born July 12, 1905, to Rufus and Fannie Elizabeth (Paxton) Mintling in Hayes County. She attended school in Hayes County.
