Be careful what you wish for
(Column ~ 09/27/01)
A long time ago, when I was still a late-night TV fan, I watched a Night Gallery or Twilight Zone episode where a woman received three wishes, along the line of a monkey's paw or Eye of the Golden Idol fantasy. At about the same time as she received the right to make the wishes, her husband was tragically killed in a catastrophic crash of some kind. ...

Class challenge
(Column ~ 09/27/01)
Class challenge Dear Editor, We agree with your paper that the United States has had a terrible tragedy. Proud of program Dear Editor, I was in awe last night, watching an outstanding performance by the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats in the old Fox Theater. Those who witnessed the talent will tell you that it is a show like no other. (My daughter is still exclaiming about it today.) The show involved key elements of a fantastic performance: skill, humor, suspense, action and a very unique style...

Do taxpayers a favor
(Column ~ 09/27/01)
Do taxpayers a favor Dear Editor, Next Tuesday, McCook schools face a voter decision to approve and replace and remodel its grade schools, East Ward (built in 1932) and North Ward (built in 1949). Otherwise, we taxpayers in the district will be dumping millions of dollars into a bad long-term (70-year-old buildings) money pit by using the bandage approach to our three neighborhood grade schools that need a major (building) operation to cure their terminal illness...

(Column ~ 09/27/01)
Celebrate! Your Heritage is the theme of this year's Heritage Days celebration. And, a celebration it will be, despite the horrible events of Sept. 11, 2001, and the battles to come against terrorism. While the nation is somber, events like Heritage Days offer a time to reflect and truly celebrate the freedoms and blessings we enjoy...
