Soap Opera Glasses
It has been old home week on ABC's General Hospital. The show is celebrating its 50th anniversary. They have brought back many of the actors and actresses who had been on the show in previous years. While I haven't been a lifelong fan, I am more recently back to the party thanks to my DVR. I have been enough of a sudsy fan (my term for being an soap opera fan ) over the years that I have kept up with the various story lines.
My first recollection of General Hospital was watching at my grandmother's house. She had to have it 'quiet' during 'her' show. I remember the old opening song and pictures that had the a picture of GH was supposed to look at it. I about fell out of the recliner when the montage of the opening credits from the beginning until now played this week. It brought back memories of sitting in my grandmother's living room and waiting for the show to be over.
There was also the flashbacks to the Luke and Laura wedding event. Which is still reportedly the most watched daytime event. While I wasn't enough of a fan to schedule my college classes around the series, I can remember the lobby of High Rise at Chadron State College being absolutely packed for the wedding show and there were people that actually skipped class to watch. (Just as a side note, the entire dorm did not, and I repeat, did not have cable at the time. It was only in the lobby.)
This past couple of weeks have been great fun to see who will show up next. Laura returned earlier but along followed Scottie. Frisco is back to cause trouble for Mac and Felicia. Bobbie, Jax, Brenda, Lucy, Kevin, Audrey, Alan, Emily, Rick, and Ethan have returned to make appearances. They even had Richard Simmonds make a guest appearance. Helena is up to no good. Luke and Laura are out to rescue Lulu because they are on yet another adventure. I wasn't expecting the evil witch doctor from Switzerland to be evil Dr. Brit's mother! Now that is interesting twist of events and I didn't see that one coming. Tracy and Monica are still at each others throats as the world is spinning around Pickle Lila. Yes, we get the Sonny and Carly story lines as well as their history is coming back to visit PC as well.
Kudos to the producers and writers to weave all those characters back into the show even if it is ever so briefly. It has been quite the nostalgic trip down the sudsy memory lane.
Yes, I know it is all a bit cheesy but for an hour a day or so, it is okay to skip out of Nebraska and arrive in Port Charles to catch up on the happenings. I am guessing I am not the only one who does. It is just that I am willing to put on my soap opera glasses and admit it. (wink)
