#2 Sandy Creek downs #4 Shelby/Rising City 28-6 in Class D-1/8-Man Clash.
FAIRFIELD, NE.
It was a great night for an early season clash between a pair of well coached, talented 8-Man football teams. After a scoreless first quarter of good old, straight up the gut football, Sandy Creek All-State quarterback Ethan Shaw fired up the passing game.
In a span of 5 minutes, 7 seconds during the latter portion of the second quarter, the veteran senior field general threw THREE touchdown passes and ran for two double PATS to give the Cougars a 22-0 halftime advantage over a hard-hitting Shelby/Rising City football team.
Shaw fired touchdown strikes to sophomore sensation Wes Biltoft (1 yard), outstanding freshman Kamerin Sealey (11 yards) and Do-it-All senior speedster Conor Rempe (63 yards) in that short time span, giving the Cougars a big halftime cushion.
Coupled with the fact Shelby/Rising City attempted only four passes and completed none during their season opening 66-24 win over Freeman and the fact Sandy Creek owns a suffocating defense, made the three touchdown lead entering the 3rd stanza even bigger for the home town Cougars.
Young 5-9, 160 pound Shelby/RC sophomore Carter Eickmeier did most of the ball toting in the opening half for Coach Zach Kubic (28 yds/11 carries), but appeared to injure himself late in the 2nd quarter making a jarring tackle right in front of me.
I cannot recall Eickmeier having a touch in the 2nd half as the Huskies turned to junior quarterback Logan Lindsley taking the direct snap and taking off around the end.
Lindsley did not have much success against the powerful Sandy Creek “D” either, garnering only 36 yards on 18 totes.
Shelby/RC did put together a nice drive nearing the end of the 3rd quarter that culminated with an 8 yard scoring toss from Lindsley to sure-handed Dalton Pokorney. The Huskie senior had a terrific 28 yard reception on the drive with a Sandy Creek defender draped all over him.
The touchdown cut the Cougar lead to 22-7 with 11:51 left in the 4th quarter, but Sandy Creek answered with a nice 5 and a half minute drive culminating with a 5 yard scoring scamper by Ethan Shaw (of course).
Shaw’s 2-point conversion run made it 28-6, which was the final score in the pad popping contest.
Sandy Creek was led by Ethan Shaw, who completed 12 of 18 passes for 165 yards and those 3 touchdowns. Shaw also was the leading gainer on the ground for the Cougars, banging for 93 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown.
Connor Rempe led Sandy Creek receivers with 93 yards on 5 catches and a touchdown. Kamerin Sealey followed with 3 receptions for 47 yards and a score.
The Cougar defense was very stingy, limiting the Huskies to just 171 total yards, 103 coming on Logan Lindsley’s 5 of 10 passing performance.
