8-Man Football was literally loaded with quality running backs in 1964. Two of the three that were named eventually made their way into both the Nebraska Eight Man Football Coaches Hall of Fame and the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame.Sports.
Both Larry Frost (Malcolm) and Larry Vlasin (Madrid), both gone too soon, made both HALLS.
Big, ripped and extremely fast, Larry Frost was literally unstoppable for a Malcolm squad that was 7-2 for the year, rambling for an incredible 1,917 yards and 41 Touchdowns on just 144 carries (13.3/touch).
Frost also used the combination of his :10.1 hundred yard dash speed and 195 pound frame to crush defenders then leave the rest in a cloud of dust. Larry also completed 10 of 19 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
The Malcolm dazzler also caught SIX passes for 175 yards, FIVE good for touchdowns. He also haad TD runs covering 78, 76 and 75 yards, returned a kickoff 76 yards for a score and recorded a 76 yard Pick 6.
And remember, all this on an 80 yard football field.
Then there was the extraordinary, all-around athlete from Madrid, Larry Vlasin. The 170 pound quarterback ran for 895 yards, completed 89 of 136 passes (65%) for 1,220 yards and 18 TDs. He also ran back 9 punts for 289 yards and three scores, brought 6 kickoff returns for 290 yards and one touchdown, and intercepted 14 passes, SEVEN of which were returned for touchdowns.
The 7 Pick 6s in a Single Season is still a State 8-Man record to this day, SIXTY years later.
Vlasin also kicked 29 PATS, two field goals and made 91 tackles on defense.
Delbert Stansberry, the Winnebago Quarterback, overcame his short 5-6 frame to connect on a sizzling 62 of 94 passes for 1,177 yards and 25 touchdowns. Stansberry also rushed 74 times for 337 yards and 10 TDS while scoring 222 of Bago’s 341 total points for the season.
So, in otherwards, Delbert Stansberry connected for a touchdown nearly every other time he threw a pass and ran for a score every 7th time he rushed the football.
There were other high caliber Backs around the state in the 8-Man ranks in 1964 and they included:
Amherst super athlete John Eckhout, who narrowly missed the 1964 All-State backfield, Pat Coyle, Mead’s sensational open field runner, Dave Macken, Platte Center’s marvelous tailback, Gerald Wambold, Beaver Crossing triple-threat, Bob Swanson, who made Wilcox click, Bartley scoring machine Gary Probasco, Dale Stewart of Red Willow and a pair of JUNIOR standouts, Dick Gangwish of Juniata (1,042 rushing) and Ken Beatty from Sutherland.
