Ord cruises into Class C2 semifinals with 47-21 win over Mitchell.
ORD, NE
Ord’s team speed and physicality was too much for visiting Mitchell as the hometown Chanticleers raced to a 26-0 halftime advantage, enroute to a convincing 47-21 victory over the Tigers.
While the blitzing Ord defense was shutting down the high-powered Mitchell run game, the Chanticleer offense was in high gear, showcasing the running of senior standouts Trent McCain (RB) and quarterback Dylan Hurlburt.
McCain blitzed the Mitchell defense to the tune of 134 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns on 19 carries. The speedy running back also caught a short flare pass from Hurlburt, turning it into a spectacular 87 yard touchdown scamper right down the Chants sideline.
Hurlburt, the Master of Trickery with a football in his hands, added 98 yards rushing and the opening touchdown for the Chants, and nearly reached perfection through the air, completing 8 of 9 aerials for 201 yards and a pair of touchdown strikes.
The Ord defense was at its wicked best in the opening half, limiting Mitchell’s twin 1000 yard rushers Dez Mitchell and Santiago Castillo to 3 and 6 yards respectively, while quarterback Cael Peters was limited to 13 yards on 8 carries and 3 of 12 through the air for 51 yards and an interception (by Aidan Ryschon).
Mitchell, who came into the game with a monstrous 3,581 yards rushing, was held to under 175 yards for the game.
One bright spot for the Tigers was an alert play by Cael Peters, who was pounded all afternoon by the Chants defense.
The powerful 5-10, 220 pound signal caller was saddled with a bad snap from center with the ball ending up bouncing around on the ground. Instead of simply falling on it or picking it up and running for a loss of yards, Peters spotted an all-by-his lonesome Xavier Galloway 20 yards down field, scooped the ball up and fired a stunning 78 yard pass to the Mitchell wide-out.
Ord will move on to the Class C2 semifinals, their 3rd in a row and 4th in the past 5 seasons, to face upset winner Yutan, who pulled off a convincing 28-6 win over second seeded Oakland-Craig.
The Chants will hit the road for that matchup next Friday with a kickoff time to be announced soon.
This also marked the 4oth anniversary of both Ord and Mitchell’s very first football playoff game in school history. You guessed it, the Chanticleers played Mitchell, winning that first meeting, 14-6 back in 1983.
That little tidbit was courtesy of longtime KNLV radio sportscaster Chuck Fryzak, one of the very best play by play voices in the business, I might add.
