Champion: Omaha Westside (12-0), Head Coach - Dan Young (Back-to-Back Class A titles)
**Many who knew Nebraska high school football proclaimed Omaha Westside as one of the best teams of all time after this 34-0 Class A championship game win over Lincoln NE, and the 3-game playoff scoring total of Westside 101, Opponents-nothing. Warriors head coach Dan Young certainly thought this current teams’ competitiveness set them apart from any other team he had ever coached.
Coach Young made reference to the “Jewels” that adorn the 1982 Class A crown his Westside team owned. Some of the Crown Jewels he referred to were QB Jeff Taylor, who threw for two TDs and ran for another in the championship game, RB Steve Vana, who rushed for a score, had a TD reception and returned a punt for a third touchdown.
Young also recognized his major college prospects who stood out against Lincoln NE.
These included All-State selections Bill Hanley and Pat Arndt (tackles), linebacker Brad Fulner, DB Scott Hill and nose guard Mike Radnov. The Warriors also had another all-stater in that Westside defensive backfield in Paul Meyers. The talent seemed endless.
Back to the Class A title game, Lincoln Northeast’s longest sustained drive of the night was their opening possession and that ended when Brad Fulner drilled Rockets HB Dave Lowe, causing a lost fumble. Westside scored two plays later when Taylor found Steve Vana for a 44 yard TD pass, setting the tone for the frigid 17 degree evening, as the Warriors jumped to a commanding 27-0 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Oh, and that final points scored/points allowed, game by game total for Omaha Westside in 1982…..

Final: (at Elkhorn Middle School)
(10-0) Elkhorn Mt. Michael 38-0 O’Neill (9-1)
Champion: Elkhorn Mt. Michael (11-0), Head Coach - Jim “Killer” Kane
**I attended this game and it just seemed like the O’Neill offense never had the ball, especially during the first half. To be specific, the Eagles had only four yards on eight rushes in that first half and completed just 2 of 8 passes. If that wasn’t bad enough, 3 of those remaining passes were picked off by the Mt. Michael defense. All this added up to a dominating 38-0 win by Killer Kane’s Knights in the Class B championship game.
I thought this game would be a terrific matchup of top notch Class B running backs, O’Neill’s Mike Hedlund versus Mount Mike’s Jeff Jamrog, but Hedlund just never got untracked, being held to 32 yards on 13 carries. In fact, Mike Hedlund had all but one of O’Neill’s 33 total yards on the ground.
On the other side of the scrimmage line, Jeff Jamrog was turning in a dominating performance, rambling for 195 yards on 33 touches. That include scoring runs of 13, 8, 1 and 2 yards. The EMM defense also limited the Eagles to those 33 rushing yards, plus 70 yards passing on 5 of 16 aerials with as many interceptions as completions (5).

Quarterfinals:
(9-0) Crofton 18-14 Fremont Bergan (8-1) (@ Crofton, 7:30)
(9-0) Republican Valley 20-7 Hebron (7-2) (@ Indianola, 7:30)
(8-0) Conestoga 20-6 Tekamah-Herman (6-2) (@ Murray)
(9-0) Gibbon 14-10 Howells (8-1) (@ Gibbon, 7:30)
Semifinals:
(10-0) Republican Valley 21-0 Crofton (10-0) (@ Indianola 7:30),
(10-0) Gibbon 7-3 Conestoga (10-0) (@ Gibbon, 7:30)
Final: (@ Indianola)
(11-0) Republican Valley 25-14 Gibbon (11-0)
Champion: Republican Valley (12-0), Head Coach - Larry Brown
**Republican Valley All-State quarterback Brad Brown put on quite the one-man show in the Mustangs 25-14 Class C-1 championship game win over Gibbon. The 5-10, 175 pound senior passed for two touchdowns, ran for another and halted not one, three Gibbon drives with interceptions from his defensive back position.
Republican Valley scored on it’s opening 70 yard drive when Brown hit Don Leiss with a 30 yard TD pass. Gibbon answered right back when Marty Thoman scored from a yard out, capping a 76 yard drive.
The game turned into a defensive struggle for most of the remainder of the first half, but a Dale Malleck pick of a Larry Homan aerial with just over a minute left in the 2nd quarter changed the momentum of this game. The pick led to a Brad Brown to Randy Bongz 12 yard TD pass that gave the Mustangs a 13-7 lead and a needed lift before halftime.
Gibbon took their second lead of the game in the 3rd quarter following a blocked punt at the Republican Valley 14 yard line. Marty Thoman scored from a yard out 4 plays later and Randy Leonard’s PAT boot gave the Buffs a 14-13 lead. But Gibbon would not hit the board again in the contest.
The dagger in the game came when the Mustangs Chris Purvis lofted a 70 yard halfback touchdown pass to QB Brad Brown. The Republican Valley star also added a 15 yard, 4th quarter scoring run to go along with his pair of sparkling interceptions in that stanza.
*Class C2*
Quarterfinals:
(9-0) Humphrey St. Francis 31-6 Weeping Water (7-2) (@ Pawnee Park, Columbus)
(8-1) Coleridge 18-14 Stromsburg (9-0) (@ Stromsburg)
(9-0) Nelson 40-6 Blue Hill (8-1) (@ Nelson)
(9-0) Henderson 37-8 Hyannis (7-2) (@ Henderson)
Semifinals:
(9-1) Coleridge 14-6 Humphrey St. Francis (10-0) (@ Coleridge)
(10-0) Nelson 22-14 Henderson (10-0) (@ Henderson)
Final: (at Wayne State College) (Att: 1,200 est.)
(10-1) Coleridge 20-12 Nelson (11-0)
Champion: Coleridge (11-1), Head Coach - Steve Zediker
**Doug Hahne, who was inserted into the Coleridge backfield during Game 5 following an injury to starting sophomore RB Mike Olesen, broke loose for 195 yards on 21 carries and scored the winning touchdown in the Bulldogs 20-12 win over Nelson in the C-2 Championship game.
Hahne, the 5-11, 145 pound All-State safety who entered the playoff season with “just” 404 rushing yards (but 10 yards per carry), also scored on a 19 yard scoring run in the second quarter that put the Bulldogs up 20-0 at the half.
Nelson made a game of it in the second half by converting a pair of Coleridge turnovers into touchdowns. The Tigers, who were then guided by supercoach, and multiple Hall-of-Famer Gary DeBoer, pulled to within 8 points of Coleridge with 3:42 left in the contest.
Nelson then recovered their own onside side kick following an 11 yard Mark Hurt to Dan Mazour TD pass, but Coleridge stopped the Tigers on 4th down at the Bulldog 37. The Bulldogs then took over and ran out the clock on Nelson, who was out of timeouts.
The Coleridge defense did a particularly outstanding job “limiting” sensational Nelson running back Ted Murray to 125 yards on 18 carries and NO touchdowns. Murray, one of the finest all-around athletes I have ever seen, had won the All-Class Gold Medal in the 300 intermediate hurdles as a junior at the State Track Meet six months earlier.
*Class D-1 (Eight-Man 1)*
Quarterfinals:
(9-0) Ansley 36-22 Elgin (7-1) (@ Ansley)
(8-0) Silver Creek 41-18 Crawford (8-0) (@ Silver Creek)
(9-0) Lawrence 57-6 Dalton-Leyton (9-0) (@ Lawrence)
(8-0) Humphrey 60-28 Nebraska City Lourdes (8-0) (@ Humphrey, 7:30)
Semifinals:
(10-0) Ansley 56-19 Silver Creek (9-0) (@ Silver Creek)
(10-0) Lawrence 50-12 Humphrey (9-0) (@ Humphrey)
Final: (@ Ansley)
(11-0) Lawrence 67-8 Ansley (11-0)
Champion: Lawrence (12-0), Head Coach - Curt Johnson
**Two rare Ansley turnovers, both in the first quarter, both leading to Lawrence touchdowns, sparked a 30-0 opening stanza lead for the visiting Panthers, who never looked back. Lawrence executed their offense and defense to near perfection enroute to a 67-8 win over one of the most storied football programs in the state.
All-Stater Bill Kucera led the Lawrence onslaught with 108 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns. Kucera rambled 48 yards for a score on the Panthers first play from scrimmage, then scored on a 5 yard run, a 79 yard kick-return to open the second half, another 5 yard dash in the 3rd and an 11 yard run in the 4th quarter.
The stout Lawrence limited Dan Moore’s vaunted Ansley offense to 184 total yards for the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Lawrence offense rushed for 241 yards in the game, 51 more than Ansley’s total offensive yardage output.
To this day, the 67-8 win by Lawrence is the most lopsided score in NSAA 8-Man football playoff history.

(10-0) Odell 54-34 Loomis (9-1) (@ Odell)
Final: (@ Odell)
(11-0) Odell 66-22 Hordville (11-0)
Champion: Odell (12-0), Head Coach - Darrell Vitosh
**Well, when a running back wins the state rushing title by more than 200 yards, one would have to assume this is someone very special. That special someone surfaced in the Class D-2 championship game and his name was Kelly Haecker. The 5-10, 154 pound Odell whiz scored six touchdowns against Hordville, four after intermission, turning a 16-16 halftime deadlock into a 66-22 Eight-Man 2 title game route by the Tigers.
How good was Haecker and Odell on this day?
Hordville had the ball 21 out of the first 22 plays of the game. The one single play Odell had the football, Haecker escaped for a 48 yard TD scamper. The shifty Odell runner added a late second quarter 19 yard scoring run to forge the 16-16 halftime tie. But it was all Haecker and Odell after the break…..immediately after the halftime break to be exact.
Mr. Haecker immediately set the tone for the second half by taking the 3rd quarter kick-off at his own one yard line, then sprinting the remaining 79 yards for a touchdown. Haecker would then add a pair of 1 yard scoring runs and 23 yard TD sprint to spark a 2nd half Odell explosion that saw the Tigers outscore Hordville 50-6.
Haecker ended the game with 173 yards on 17 carries, while Hordville’s Todd Tyler, the running back Kelly outdistanced by 213 yards for the state rushing crown, was held to 118 yards on 26 totes. Tyler did score all three Hordville touchdowns though, with runs of 6, 1 and 4 yards.
