1980 Football Playoff Results:
*Class A*
Quarterfinals:
(9-0) Creighton Prep 10-7 North Platte (5-4) (@ UNO, 7:30 pm)
(7-2) Lincoln East 22-13 Fremont (7-2) (@ Fremont, 7:30 pm)
(7-2) Omaha Westside 10-6 Ralston (8-1) (@ Ralston, 8:00)
(9-0) Omaha Burke 17-14 Omaha Central (6-3) (@ Omaha Benson, 7:30)
Semifinals:
(10-0) Creighton Prep 31-0 Lincoln East (8-2)
(10-0) Omaha Burke 13-10 Omaha Westside (8-2)
Final: (at Burke Stadium) (Att: 8,500 est.)
(11-0) Creighton Prep 24-7 Omaha Burke (11-0)
Champion: Creighton Prep (12-0), Head Coach- Tom Jaworski
** In Creighton Preps case, the 4th time was the charm. In the Class A Finals 4 of the past 6 seasons, Tom Jaworski’s Junior Jays finally shed their bridesmaid tag with a resounding 24-7 win over Omaha Burke in a battle of the unbeatens. Prep, who was never really challenged all season until the North Platte opening round playoff game, may have received the lift they needed when Jim Kennedy pirated a second Jeff Fisher pass that set up a Jeff Hardick 11 yard TD run with just 34 ticks left in the half. The Hardick score gave Creighton Prep a 14-0 halftime advantage.
Although trailing 17-0 early in the 4th, Burke was still in the ballgame until Prep defender Conan Parks blindsided Fisher at the Bulldog 12 and the Junior Jays Bennie Ricceri then pounced on the loose football. One play later, Brent Craft bowled over more than one Burke defender on his way for a touchdown, putting the game out of reach at 24-0 after Tom Hoover split the uprights with his 3rd PAT kick of the evening.
All-State, 1000 yard rusher Brent Craft led the Creighton Prep ground attack with 128 yards on 28 carries. Burke junior Victor Breakfield ran for 100 yards on 12 carries in a losing cause.
*Class B*
Quarterfinals:
(7-2) Superior 26-7 Boys Town (9-0) (@ Boys Town)
(8-1) Waverly 23-20 Chadron (8-1) (@ Waverly/1:30)
(8-0) Grand Island Central Catholic 28-0 Lexington (8-1) (@ Lexington)
(7-1) McCook 35-8 Ainsworth (8-1) (@ Ainsworth)
Semifinals:
(9-1) Waverly 21-20 Superior (9-1) (@ Waverly)
(8-1) McCook 35-8 Grand Island Central Catholic (9-0) (@ McCook)
Final: (at Seacrest Field, Lincoln)
(11-1) Waverly 14-7 McCook (10-1)
Champion: Waverly (11-1), Head Coach- John Lawler
**Despite being labelled as the Cinderella team in Class B, Waverly used it’s stout defense to dominate the “dominators” from McCook, turning back the favorite Bison 14-7 enroute to the Class B championship. With the exception of a 62 yard touchdown pass from McCook reserve QB Ross Halsey to Ken Henton on a sleeper play that caught Waverly of guard, the Bison were only able to cross the 50 yard line only one other time in the game. And amazingly, McCook ended up out yarding the Vikings 202 to 161 but still could not muster a long, sustained drive in the contest.
Scott Seymore scored both Waverly touchdowns on runs of 2 and 3 yards, on his way to just 42 yards on 11 carries. But Seymore’s ground total of 42 yards was good enough to take game rushing honors.
The great thing about this Class B title for the Waverly? 10 of the 11 offensive starters for the Vikings were underclassmen.
*Class C1*
Quarterfinals:
(9-0) Pierce 36-0 Bayard (7-2) (@ Pierce)
(8-1) David City Aquinas 34-21 Bennington (9-0) (@ David City)
(9-0) Geneva 10-3 Ponca (8-0) (@ Geneva)
(8-1) Wahoo Neumann 24-13 Oakland-Craig (9-0) (@ Neumann)
Semifinals:
(9-1) David City Aquinas 41-7 Pierce (10-0) (@ David City)
(9-1) Wahoo Neumann 34-7 Geneva (10-0) (@ Neumann)
Final: (at David City) (Att: 3,000 est.)
(10-1) David City Aquinas 19-9 Wahoo Neumann (10-1) (@ David City)
Champion: David City Aquinas (11-1), Head Coach - Dave McMahon
**Aquinas avenged a 13-6 regular season, Week 2 loss to Neumann to capture the Class C-1 football state championship trophy. The no-name Monarchs, who really never had many individuals singled out by head coach Dave McMahon during the season, were led by All-State quarterback Tony Didier and team leader Jim Meysenburg.
Pat Roh and Chad Lyons each scored on 1 yard runs in this C-1 title game and future Husker Brian Hiemer booted a pair of field goals (38, 20 yards), giving Aquinas all the points they needed. The Monarchs were the second team of the day to be out yarded by their opponent (176-257) and still win a state championship.
Wahoo Neumann state rushing champion Larry Pospisil, who had been averaging 151 yards a game coming in, was held to 94 yards and no touchdowns by the stingy Aquinas defense.
*Class C2*
Quarterfinals:
(8-1) Grant 41-21 Stromsburg (7-2) (@ Grant)
(8-1) Mead 19-6 Overton (8-1) (@ Overton/2:00)
(8-1) Curtis Medicine Valley 41-23 Loomis (8-1) (@ Curtis)
(8-1) Ewing 20-14 Winside (8-1) (@ Ewing)
Semifinals:
(9-1) Grant 51-15 Mead (9-1) (@ Fremont)
(9-1) Ewing 42-14 Medicine Valley (9-1) (@ Ewing)
Final: (@ Ewing)
(11-0) Grant 24-14 Ewing (10-1)
Champion: Grant (12-0), Head Coach - Al Gaston
**Grant marched to it’s unprecedented third straight Class C-2 state football title with a punishing wishbone ground attack, amidst light snow and 20 degree temperatures on the Plainsmen home turf. Dan Fortik rushed for 108 yards on 15 totes and hit paydirt with an 11 yard scoring jaunt. Richard Norman added 105 yards and a 3 yard scoring run, as the Plainsmen out rushed Jeff Tomjack and the Ewing Tigers, 275 to 122 in the frigid temperatures.
Grant held a 17-0 lead until Tomjack finally scored for Ewing on a one yard QB sneak with 6:02 left in the game.
*Class D-1 (Eight-Man 1)*
Quarterfinals:
(9-0) Humphrey 32-6 Stapleton (8-1) (@ Columbus Lakeview)
(8-0) St. Edward 40-18 Harrisburg (8-1) (@ Harrisburg)
(8-1) Lawrence 26-18 Rising City (9-0) (@ Rising City)
(8-1) Adams 32-14 Beemer (8-0) (@ Adams/1:30)
Semifinals:
(10-0) Humphrey 48-16 St. Edward (9-0) (@ St. Edward)
(9-1) Lawrence 42-14 Adams (9-1) (@ Adams)
Final: (at Lawrence)
(11-0) Humphrey 20-7 Lawrence (10-1)
Champion: Humphrey High (12-0), Head Coach - LeRoy Ditter
**Humphrey sprinted to a 20-0 halftime lead, then turned to defense in the second half to hold off a hard charging Lawrence team for the Class D-1, 8-Man football championship. The opportunistic Humphrey defense forced Lawrence into 3 fumbles and 5 interceptions on the night, spelling the difference in the game.
Paul Slizoski (2 run) and quarterback Ed Fuxa (6 run) each had first quarter touchdowns, while Fuxa connected with Jeff Christensen for a 22 yard scoring pass on a 4th and three situation, to reach the 20-0 halftime advantage. But things dried up for the Bulldog offense after that.
After getting 9 first downs and 3 TDs in the first half, the Bulldogs were unable to get a single 1st down after halftime against a ferocious Lawrence “D”. That, plus the running of Panther All-State back Joe E. Svoboda, pulled Lawrence to within 20-7 to start the 3rd quarter.
It was the heroics of Humphrey’s Steve Sjuts that may have saved the day for the Bulldogs in the 4th stanza. Sjuts not only pirated an Ed Karmazin at the Humphrey 16 yard line with less than 3 minutes left in the game, but also broke through to sack the outstanding Lawrence signal caller for a 6 yard loss with 32 seconds left in the contest.
Powerful, hard running Lawrence all-stater Joe E. Svoboda led all rushers with 103 yards on 33 carries. And why did Svoboda go by “Joe E. Svoboda”? His backfield running mate was none other than……………..Joe I. Svoboda. Now you know.
*Class D-2 (Eight-Man-2)*
Quarterfinals:
(8-0) Bartley 37-8 Snyder (6-2) (@ Bartley)
(8-1) Filley 36-32 Madrid Wheatland (8-1) (@ Madrid)
(8-1) Hildreth 19-18 Arthur (9-0) (@ Ogallala)
(9-0) Greeley 26-15 Lodgepole (7-1) (@ Chappell)
Semifinals:
(9-1) Filley 36-14 Bartley (9-0) (@ Filley)
(10-0) Greeley 34-24 Hildreth (9-1) (@ Greeley)
Final: (@ Greeley)
(9-1) Filley 24-8 Greeley (11-0)
Champion: Filley (11-1), Head Coach- Dan Parks
**A 65 yard, third quarter kick return by Filley’s Alan Wiese, coupled with 6 failed Red Zone conversions by Greeley, gave the Wildcats their first ever state football title, defeating Greeley, 24-8.
Wiese, the outstanding Filley quarterback, actually muffed the kick return, but picked up the football, faked a handoff to Jeff Van Eperen, pivoted his right foot, then proceeded to sprint untouched for the score.
Greeley’s only touchdown of the game came on a guard-eligible pass from QB Jerry Mlinar to Terry Wood. That did cut the Filley lead to 16-8 at the time in the 3rd frame, but Alan Wiese performed his kick return magic following that lone Bulldog score. Greeley actually made it inside the Filley 15 yard line on four different occasions, only to come up empty each time.
This game was like a Who’s Who of Class D-2, 8-Man football, featuring Greeley all-state QB Mlinar, and Filley all-state running back Donovan DeBuhr, plus Wildcat all-state guard Greg Lenners and End Jeff Van Eperen on offense.
On defense, Greeley boasted all-state DE Shawn O’Connor and 1000 yard rusher Tim Birkby (1,382 yards), who was named all-state at defensive back. Filley countered with Alan Wiese, the Wildcat QB who also was an all-state linebacker.
If you counted 7 players between the two teams, you would be right. Who’s Who in D-2 indeed!
