*(editor's note: Sadly enough, none of the honorable mention lists were legible enough to read and post. This is the first time I have encountered this problem and hopefully the last.)
Up first is a review of the 2004 Boys State Basketball Tournament.
**Final Class D-2 Regular Season Ratings**
1-Loomis (22-1), 2-Allen (21-1), 3-Thedford (18-1), 4-Ewing (23-1), 5-Prague (18-3, 6-Lynch (21-4), 7-Wallace (18-4), 8-Wynot, 9-Bruning-Davenport (16-9), 10-Madrid Wheatland.
*Class D-2:*
*Tournament Qualifiers/(head coach): Lynch (Kris Freeland); Lindsay Holy Family (Bob Schnitzler); Thedford (Adam Marten); Banner County (Bill Wallace); Allen (Dave Uldrich); Loomis (Steve Johnson); Ewing (Greg Appleby); Bruning-Davenport (Fred Kluck).
Quarterfinals:
(14-8) Lindsay Holy Family 63, Ewing 58 (23-1) {Overtime}
(21-4) Lynch 52, Thedford 50 (18-1)
(22-1) Loomis 88, Banner County 43 (15-8)
(21-1) Allen 68, Bruning-Davenport 58 (16-9)
Semifinals:
(15-8) Lindsay Holy Family 69, Lynch 66 (22-4)
(23-1) Loomis 59, Allen 55 (22-1)
Finals:
(24-1) Loomis 87, Lindsay Holy Family 66 (16-8)
D-2 Champion: Loomis (25-1) - Head Coach: Steve Johnson Asst: Dan Brown
*The D-2 All-Tournament team: Casey Bender-Lindsay Holy Family (6-5, Jr.), Seth Hadenfeldt*-Lynch (6-2, Sr.), Drew Billeter-Loomis (6-1, Jr..), Koby Hamilton-Thedford (6-6, Sr.), Cory Uldrich-Allen (6-7, Sr.)
*The Class D-2 tournament scoring title went to Lindsay Holy Family’s Casey Bender, who exploded for 30 points in the Bulldogs 69-66 semifinal win over Lynch. Bender ended up with a three day total of 61 points (10, 30, 21), seven ahead of D-2 champion Loomis excellent Drew Billiter, who had games of 24, 11 and 19 points in the tournament.
*The Class D-2 final: Well, Lindsay Holy Family controlled the first quarter against a talent-rich, deep Loomis team enroute to a 15-14 lead and a 24-14 lead into the early minutes of the second frame. It did not stay that way for long. The running, gunnin’ Wolves, who subbed in 4 or 5 players at a shot, outscored Holy Family 29-17 in the 2nd stanza and 73-43 the final three quarters to post a 87-58 win.
After Loomis coach Steve Johnson figured out the Bulldogs offense, the Wolves forced 14 second quarter turnovers and 31 in all during the D-2 Final. When the much quicker Loomis defense took the inside game away from Holy Family, it was a matter of wearing them down down as the game progressed.
The Wolves starting lineup of twin brothers Mark and Matt Schukar, Luke Thorell, Aaron Reese and Drew Billiter worked like a well oiled machine and the Wolves had a budding star in freshman Lance Thorell, who came off the bench to score 19 points, matching Billiter’s total for the game.
Although the Loomis loss was a bitter pill to swallow for Bob Schnitzler’s Lindsay Holy Family crew, the fact the Bulldogs were unranked and 16-9 entering the State Tournament, made 2003/2004 a raving success.
**Final Class D-1 Regular Season Ratings**
1-Falls City Sacred Heart (22-3), 2-Greeley-Wolbach (20-3), 3-Spencer-Naper (21-3), 4-Shelby (17-4), 5-Humphrey St. Francis (21-3), 6-Silver Lake (21-2), 7-Howells (14-6), 8-Pleasanton, 9-Omaha Nation (19-4), 10-Elgin Pope John (19-5).
*Class D-1:*
*Tournament Qualifiers/(head coach) Leyton (Dave Wiedeman); Silver Lake (Damon McDonald); Humphrey St. Francis (Eric Kessler); Spencer-Naper (Jim Carlson); Elm Creek (Ryan Luke); Omaha Nation (Brad Vogt); Falls City Sacred Heart (Doug Goltz); Shelby (Terry Chadek)
Quarterfinals:
(22-3) Falls City Sacred Heart 75, Leyton 50 (17-3)
(21-3) Spencer-Naper 55, Silver Lake 51 (21-2)
(19-3) Humphrey St. Francis 52, Elm Creek 42 (13-10)
(17-4) Shelby 46, Omaha Nation 35 (19-4)
Semifinals:
(23-3) Falls City Sacred Heart 54, Spencer-Naper 49 (22-3)
(18-4) Shelby 54, Humphrey St. Francis 36 (20-3)
Finals:
(24-3) Falls City Sacred Heart 44, Shelby 35 (19-4)
D-1: Falls City Sacred Heart (23-5). Head Coach: Doug Goltz. Asst: Matt Cumro, Mark Junker, Mike Huppert.
*The D-1 All-Tournament team; Kurt Dummer-Spencer-Naper (6-3, Sr), Joe Hopwood-Shelby (6-0, Sr.), Adam Klein-Silver Lake (6-4, Sr.), Brian Huppert-Falls City Sacred Heart (6-3, Sr.) and Justin Vonderschmidt-Falls City Sacred Heart (6-2, Sr.)
*The D-1 Tournament scoring title was grabbed by Sacred Heart senior Brian Huppert, who drained 53 points in three days (14, 22, 17) for the State Champion Irish. Joe Hopwood of Shelby was next with 41 points after scoring 37 big ones in the first two games. Falls City Sacred Heart super coach Doug Goltz apparently was apparently aware of Hopwood’s prior success because the Irish hounded the Shelby sharpshooter like the dickens in the title game, holding him to a 2 of 17 shooting performance from the field. and NO free throws, for a meager 4 points.
*The D-1 championship game: Falls City Sacred Heart seemed to get real boost with 3.5 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. With Doug Goltz’s Irish trailing Shelby 27-22, junior guard Jeremy Kearney pulled up right in front of his own bench to drain a 25 foot jumper. The buzzer-beating, bullseye trey pulled Sacred Heart to within 27-25 at the end of three quarters.
The Irish proceeded to score the first 11 points of the 4th quarter, giving them a 37-26 lead with just 4 minutes left in the game. Shelby’s smothering man-to-man defense had done a terrific job up to that point, but the Irish applied a crushing defense of their own to give Sacred Heart a 44-35 victory.
The State Championship returned the Irish to the D-1 throne after a four year absence and gave Sacred Heart their 7th state title, equalling the 6th most in state at the time, all coming during the 18 year tenure of the great Doug Goltz.
Big Brian Huppert led Falls City Sacred Heart in scoring with 17 points, the only Irish player in double figures. My old buddy Matt Perry, a two-time 1000 yard rusher, led Shelby with 15 points.
**Final Class C-2 Regular Season Ratings**
1-Cambridge (23-1), 2-Elmwood-Murdock (21-2), 3-Louisville (17-3), 4-West Point Central Catholic (19-4), 5-Deshler (18-3), 6-Randolph (20-2), 7-Sandy Creek (19-5), 8-Ravenna (20-4), 9-Lutheran High NE, 10-Scribner-Snyder.
*Class C-2:*
*Tournament Qualifiers/(head coach): Cambridge (Del Schoenfish); Sutton (Steve Spongberg); West Point Central Catholic (Duane Mendlik); Ravenna (Paul Beranek); Louisville (Stan Hendricks); Randolph (Ted Stubbs); Elmwood-Murdock (Terry Warner); Friend (Paul Martin)
Quarterfinals:
(21-2) Elmwood-Murdock 48, Friend 37 (13-8)
(17-3) Louisville 45, Randolph 44 (20-2)
(20-4) Ravenna 70, West Point Central Catholic 64 (19-4)
(23-1) Cambridge 54, Sutton 47 (16-6)
Semifinals:
(18-3) Louisville 47, Elmwood-Murdock 42 (22-2)
(24-1) Cambridge 77, Ravenna 62 (21-4)
Finals:
(25-1) Cambridge 58, Louisville 50 (19-3)
C-2 Champion: Cambridge (24-0); Head Coach: Del Schoenfish. Asst: George Lytle, Ken Houghtelling
*The C-2 All-Tournament Team was: Waid Vontz-Cambridge (6-0, Soph.), Marcus Vontz-Cambridge (6-1, Sr.), Matt Deppenschmidt-Cambridge (6-2, Sr.), Joseph Jackson-Louisville (6-3, Sr.), Drake Beranek-Ravenna (6-2, Soph.).
*Class C-2 Tournament scoring title race was no contest after day one with Louisville’s talented Joseph Jackson scoring 52 points the final two games. Jackson hit 67 points for the Big Dance (15, 27, 25) to easily finish ahead of Cambridge sophomore Waid Vontz, who scored 51 (21, 13, 17), but young Vontz added a state championship medal while Jackson settled for the runner-up piece around his neck.
*The Class C-2 Championship game was a terrific match-up featuring #1 rated Cambridge against #3 Louisville and high scoring Joseph Jackson. Cambridge, known as football school back in that day, set out to add a state basketball championship to go with their gridiron title the previous fall.
It seemed like Louisville was playing catch-up the entire game as the Vontz brothers combined for 37 of the Trojan’s 58 points in the 58-50 Cambridge win. Senior Marcus Vontz led the way with 20 points, while sophomore bro Waid added 17. Both Vontz boys nailed three treys in the contest and were a combined 13 of 15 from the charity stripe (Waid missed a pair).
Louisville made a game of it in the 4th quarter when Tommy Robbins scored 6 points in a row, helping to slice a 44-33 Cambridge lead to 45-43 with 3:51 left in the contest. But, as was the case the entire game, Cambridge matched the Lions run with a barrage of free throws in that 4th quarter.
IN FACT, the Trojans did not connect on a single field goal try in that final quarter…..not one. But a 14 of 18 performance from the charity stripe will do wonders for you when shots aren’t dropping from the field.
Louisville ace Joseph Jackson, who was one of the most talented players in the entire 2004 State Tournament, led all scorers in the game with 25 points, despite being held to 11 of 30 shooting from the field and NO trips to the free throw line.
**Final Class C-1 Regular Season Ratings**
1-Grand Island Central Catholic (24-1), 2-Elkhorn Mt. Michael (21-3), 3-Boone Central/NG (20-3), 4-Kearney Catholic (23-1), 5-Bridgeport (18-1), 6-Wahoo (18-5), 7-Wahoo Neumann (17-5), 8-Syracuse (16-5), 9-Chase County (17-6), 10-Columbus Lakeview.
*Class C-1*:
*Tournament Qualifiers/(head coach): Elkhorn Mt. Michael (Jim Mayberger); Valentine (Rick Hesse); Lincoln Christian (Monty Jones); Kearney Catholic (Donny Leiss); Chase County (Rick Titus); Twin River (Todd Heier); Grand Island Central Catholic (Bill Gavers); Bridgeport (David Baxter)
Quarterfinals:
(24-1) Grand Island Central Catholic 68, Twin River 48 (13-9)
(23-1) Kearney Catholic 61, Chase County 47 (17-6)
(11-12) Valentine 70, Bridgeport 52 (18-1)
(11-12) Lincoln Christian 60, Elkhorn Mt. Michael 58 (21-3)
Semifinals:
(24-1) Kearney Catholic 57, Grand Island Central Catholic 53 (25-1)
(12-12) Lincoln Christian 46, Valentine 34 (12-12)
Finals:
(25-1) Kearney Catholic 63, Lincoln Christian 48 (13-12)
C-1 Champion: Kearney Catholic (26-1). Head Coach: Donny Leiss, Asst: Tom Slechta, A.J. Landon, Josh Lewis, Nick Svehla.
*The C-1 All-Tournament Team: Todd Peterson-Grand Island Central Catholic (6-5, Sr.), Brian Willet-Lincoln Christian (6-4, Sr.), Blake Cover-Kearney Catholic (6-1, Jr.), Tyler Bryson-Kearney Catholic (5-11, Sr.,), Brian Weber-Valentine (6-2, Sr.).
*The C-1 tournament scoring crown went Kearney Catholic floor leader Blake Cover, who hit 61 points for his 3-day total in Lincoln. Cover had games of 17, 20 and 24 points to finish three in front of Lincoln Christian ace, Brian Willet, who canned 58 in his trio of tournament games (19, 19, 20 points).
*The C-1 championship game: A funny thing happened on the way to the anticipated Final matchup between Elkhorn Mt. Michael and GICC. It DIDN’T happen. A dangerous 11-12 Lincoln Christian squad upset Mt. Michael in the first round and an undersized Kearney Catholic team, with a 6-2 Blake Cover as it’s tallest player, eliminated a GICC group in the semifinals that included the trio of 6-5 Todd Peterson, 6-6 Scott Wissing and 6-10 shot blocking machine, Kenny Howard.
So it was, an upstart 13-12 Lincoln Christian facing a hot shooting Kearney Catholic team on a 23 game winning streak.
Watching the opening half, especially the 2nd quarter, I thought maybe Kearney Catholic’s shooting luck may have finally run out. Christian held the Stars scoreless for a span of 10 minutes, 7 seconds after Kearney Catholic had taken a 9-1 lead to open the game. Matter of fact, the Crusaders had a low scoring 17-12 lead until a Blake Cover three pointer with 3.5 ticks left in the second quarter cut the Christian lead to 17-15 at the break. But it was Stars coach Donny Leiss that implored his team to put the hammer down on defense during a halftime speech. It must have done the trick.
The Star came out after halftime with a trapping, full court pressure defense that forced 14 second half Lincoln Christian errors, and all the while Cover and friends were filling the orange cylinder with 48 points during the 3rd and 4th quarters. Kearney Catholic more than tripled their opening half total (15 pts).
Led by the hot-handed Blake Cover’s 24 points, the Stars overcame an abysmal 4 of 23 accuracy mark from beyond the arc to post the 63-48 win over Lincoln Christian. Tyler Bryson added 17 points for the Stars, while Bryce Wiltgen chipped in 15.
Lincoln Christian’s scoring leader was Brian Willet, who hit 20 points in the loss. Willet was a model of consistency during the 3 day tournament, scoring 19, 19 and 20 points on Thursday, Friday and Saturday respectively.
**Final Class B Regular Season Ratings**
1-Ralston (21-2), 2-Elkhorn (18-4), 3-Beatrice (16-4), 4-Ogallala (18-13), 5-Omaha Gross (15-7), 6-Blair (16-6), 7-Lincoln Pius X (12-8), 8-Hastings (17-4), 9-York (17-5), 10-Gretna (14-8).
*Class B:*
*Tournament Qualifiers/(head coach): Gretna (Brad Feeken); Hastings (Mark Etzelmiller); Ralston (Bill Heard); Blair (Brian Mlnarik); Lincoln Pius X (Ray Forycki); Ogallala (Marty Wragge); Beatrice (Jim Weeks); York (Dan Malleck).
Quarterfinals:
(21-2) Ralston 48, Gretna 45 (14-8)
(17-4) Hastings 54, York 42 (17-5)
(12-8) Lincoln Pius X 53, Beatrice 49 (16-4)
(16-6) Blair 62, Ogallala 50 (18-3)
Semifinals:
(22-2) Ralston 48, Hastings 40 (18-4)
(13-8) Lincoln Pius X 54, Blair 35, (17-6)
Finals:
(14-8) Lincoln Pius X 64, Ralston 38 (23-2)
Class B Champion: Lincoln Pius X (15-8). Head Coach: Paul Forycki, Asst: Greg Lesiak, Brian Spicka, Tim Meduna, Josh Schlautman.
*The Class B All-Tournament Team: Tyler Tomasek-Ralston (6-5, Sr.), Adam Brill-Lincoln Pius X (5-11, Sr.), Tony Schultz-Lincoln Pius X (5-10, Sr.), Jacob Chandler*-Ralston (6-2, Sr.); Marcus Laudner-Blair (6-2, Sr.).
*The Class B State Tournament scoring leader was Adam Brill of state champion Lincoln Pius X. Brill scored 39 points in three games (17, 7, 15 pts) to outdistance teammate Tony Schultz, who totalled 35 points (9, 15, 11 pts).
*The Class B final: Lincoln Pius X went from being a .500 team after 14 regular season games, to despatching defending state champion Norris and #3 Beatrice in the District tournament, to being an improbable Class B State Champion.
The Thunderbolts raced out to an 18-6 first quarter lead and coasted to an easier than anticipated 64-38 win over a fine Ralston team. Ray Forycki’s Pius X offense buried it’s first 6 shots of the 2nd quarter to stretch the stunning lead to 30-16 at the half, and a 41-24 cushion after three stanzas.
The Thunderbolts Adam Brill just seemed to personify the kind of season this team went through in 2003/2004. Brill wasn’t a starter, was listed as #24 in the program, but ended up wearing #34 during the state tournament. During the 3rd and 4th quarters in the Class B championship game, Adam Brill was even listed as being in the game on the Bob Devaney Center scoreboard.
Well, the Ralston basketball team certainly knew he was in the game, even if they DIDN”T realize who #34 might be. Brill finished the Class B title game with 15 points, 4 boards and a pair of assists and ended up leading all Class B scorers with his 39 points during the 3 day Carnival.
Besides Brill, Pius had three others in double figures, including game scoring leader Tyler Shreve with 16 points. Garrett Hernandez and Tony Schultz added 12 and 11 points respectively for the Bolts, who shot a sizzling 61.1% from the field (22-36) for the game.
Ralston, who was led by Tyler Tomaseks 8 points, suffered through a 30% shooting night from the field.

Class A Champion: Bellevue West (23-2). Head Coach: Doug Woodard. Asst: Steve Willet, Troy Wharton, Jim Buswell.
*The Class A All-Tournament Team consisted of: Josh Dotzler-Bellevue West (6-0, Jr.), Jeff Martin-Bellevue West (6-0, Soph.), Joe Roth-Omaha Westside (6-5, Sr.), Marcus Minzel-Lincoln High (6-0, Sr.), Matt Hill-Lincoln SE (6-9, Soph.).
*Class A Tournament scoring honors went to Joe Roth of Omaha Westside, who increased his scoring total every game during the Class A Tournament. Roth scored 10, then 18 and hit 20 points in the Warriors 70-51 Championship loss to Bellevue West. Joe’s three day total of 48 points was 7 better than Jeff Martin of Bellevue West, who scored 41 in three outings (19, 12, 10 pts).
*The Class A championship game: Bellevue West star Josh Dotzler, who sat out some of the 2nd quarter due to foul troubles, took over the game in the 4th quarter to lead the Thunderbirds to a resounding 70-51 Class A Final win over Omaha Westside.
Leading just 49-46 entering the money quarter, Dotzler fed Chris Howard for a bucket. Then, following Howard’s cross-court (skip) pass to Michael Jenkins that resulted in a sweet 3 pointer, Dotzler then again dropped a dime to Howard for a basket that gave Bellevue West a 56-46 lead. Westside 6-5 all-stater Joe Roth then cut the Thunderbird lead to 8, but “Johnny-on-the-Spot” Josh Dotzler cashed in on a pair of free throw tosses, then stole a Warrior pass and laid it in, to extend his teams lead to a 12 point, 60-48 bulge. Bellevue West never looked in the rear view after that as Dotzler scored 8 of his 15 team leading points in the final three minutes of the game, sealing the win for Doug Woodard’s forces.
Michael Jenkins added 14 points for the Thunderbirds, while Jake Meyer (12) and Jeff Martin (10 points) also hit double figure scoring in the Class A title contest. As expected, Omaha Westside ace Joe Roth led all scorers with his 20 points.
The 2004 Class A championship gave Bellevue West it’s 2nd title, the initial crown coming in 2000.
**The 2003 All-Class, All-Tournament Team was an all Class A quintet including; Josh Dotzler-Bellevue West (6-0, Jr.), Jeff Martin-Bellevue West (6-0, Soph.), Joe Roth-Omaha Westside (6-5, Sr.), Marcus Minzel-Lincoln High (6-0, Sr.), Matt Hill-Lincoln SE (6-9, Soph.).
