Current List of Nebraska high school football career 5,000 Yard Rushers.
There certainly have not been many years I could add four entries to my Career 5000 Yard Rushers list. Yes, there was a record five backs that cracked the coveted list back in 2011, but all of them were not active when the State finals at Memorial Stadium rolled around.
This season, there is a representative from each form of high school football in Nebraska….11-Man, 8-Man and 6-Man, playing in a State Championship game. Four-time 1000 yard rusher Dylan Kautz of Norfolk Catholic represents the 11-Man ranks, Mullen’s Lane Edis is from the 8-Man football nation, and AJ Jenkins, another 4-time 1000 yard man from Wilcox-Hildreth, and Trent Reed of Hay Springs, will play against each other in the 6-Man game.
All four will be playing in a state championship within the next 4 days, with a chance to pad those stats a bit. But…..if the truth were known, I’m betting Kautz, Edis Jenkins and Reed would rather have a state championship medal, than a higher place on this 5000 yard career list.
The amazing Kautz, Nebraska’s fastest high school human, has run for 7,486 yards for Norfolk Catholic, who will face Centennial for the Class C-2 title. That game will be played next Tuesday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln with a 10:15 am kickoff.
Dylan Kautz is ranked 3rd all-time in career rushing in Nebraska prep football history.
Lane Edis of Mullen, a three time thousand yard runner, is ranked 2 slots to the rear view of Kautz, currently holding down 5th place all-time with his 6,708 yards. Edis and his Bronco cohorts will play Johnson-Brock for the Class D-2, 8-Man title, next Monday at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 10:15 am
AJ Jenkins of Wilcox-Hildreth, the other 4 time-1000 yard rusher, and Trent Reed of Hay Springs will face off in the 6-Man final tomorrow (Friday) night at Foster Field on the campus of UNK in Kearney. There is 12,957 Career Rushing Yards going head to head in less than 24 hours from now!
Trent Reed from Hay Springs has rushed for an amazing 6,549 yards in just three seasons and 29 games. I'll do the math. That's 225 rushing yards every time he straps on the pads for the Hawks. Combine rushing, receiving, passing and return yards, and you have an unthinkable 7,858 yards and 111 touchdowns. Again, that's in just three seasons. The 190 pound Reed ranks #6 on the all-time rushing list.
Jenkins has sprinted for 6,408 yards thus far in his career, and is ranked 8th all-time. Only two other players that played 6-Man football all 4 years has hit the 5,000 career rushing mark, one of whom, being Wyatt Simpson of Hyannis (5,859-2000/2003).
