1000 Yard Guy's 2017 All-State Football Teams
One of my favorite times of the high school football season is choosing my All-State teams. This season seemed more difficult for some reason. So many deserving players.
But sitting here with a broken right collarbone, a dislocated left shoulder and a compression fracture of a vertebrae on the right side of my back, caused me to think a little bit about being so strict on the number of players for each team.
In my way normal of thinking, an 11-Man All-State offensive football team should have 11 slots, plus a Place Kicker and an “Athlete” slot if necessary. Same deal on defense, except a Punter slot replaces the Place Kicker. Makes sense.
I did some figuring concerning how difficult it is to be an All-State football player.
For instance, in 11-Man football, there were 28 teams competing in Class A. So obviously, there are 11 starters on both sides of the ball per team. That would be 308 players in Class A to choose from for an 11 player All-State football team on either side of the ball, so only 9% of those 308 players make the grade on an 11 slot All-State football team…...9 percent.
So, to be honest, there were some difficult choices to make in 2017. Instead of being a hard core guy concerning some of these picks, I added a spot on an All-State team if necessary instead of just dumping some deserving young man who made the grade but couldn’t be included because there were “only” 11 slots. It may have bumped up this “elite” number up to 11% instead of 9%. in certain cases. That still keeps these All-State teams in that Elite category to me, despite the 2% jump IMO.
I did not do a Super-State team in 2017, although there were a few players below Class A that could have competed week to week in the Big Boy class.
