Here is how the 1993 State Basketball Tournament played out.

*Class D-2:

Quarterfinals:

(18-5) Elgin 60, Giltner 52 (10-8)

*The D-2 All-Tournament team consisted of 2 sophomores, a junior and a 2 seniors.

The seniors were 6-1 Thad Mumm of CHB and big 6-5 Alan Pokorski of Prague. The underclassmen consisted of 6-3 Elgin junior Chad Schmidt and sophomores Jeff Kraus (6-1) of Hyannis and the star of the D-2 final, Elgin’s 6-2 Dave Ochsner.

*Although only playing in two state tournament games, Prague’s Alan Pokorski won tournament scoring honors with his two game total of 54 (23, 31). Elgin’s Chad Schmidt was runner-up with 51 tallies in 3 games (22, 20, 9).

*In the D-2 final, Hyannis seemed to be in control, leading Elgin 58-49 with 2:30 left in the game. In what could be a fateful decision, Hyannis went into a stall game after Elgin’s Chris Sullivan drained a three pointer to pull the Tigers within 58-52.

Elgin tied it at 60 with 20 seconds left but Hyannis Richard Evans calmly sunk 2 free throws to lift the Longhorns to a 62-60 lead with 8.3 ticks remaining.

Elgin’s Chad Schmidt, who had scored 20 points the day before against Prague, took the inbounds pass and raced up court. Schmidt had been quiet all day, scoring only 6 points, but pulled up and drained a trey with just a second left to give Elgin the D-2 Crown.

*The D-1 All-Tournament team; State Champion Adams and runner-up Cedar Rapids each placed 2 players on the mythical team, while Paxton filled the remaining slot. The champions Hornets placed juniors Chad Ideus (6-6) and Chad Harms (6-2) on the squad while Cedar Rapids had seniors Brent Martinsen (6-1) and Brad Zoucha (6-1). Paxton 6-2 junior Jason Marquez rounded out the 1993 group

*The D-1 Tournament scoring contest was a runaway as the splendid Chad Ideus of Adams burned the nets with his three game total of 84 points. After scoring 18 points in the Hornets opening game win over Maxwell, the Adams sharpshooter followed up with back-to-back games of 33 points. Ideus also pulled down 45 rebounds for the tournament. Classmate Chad Harms scored 48 points (14, 22, 12) to claim the runner-up spot in tournament scoring.

*Nobody in the D-1 tournament field was going to touch Adams in ‘93. The Hornets jumped out to a 32-22 lead over Cedar Rapids in the finals before blitzing the Tigers 48-26 in the 2nd half. The stingy Adams defense held Cedar to 31% shooting for the game.

How good was Adams in 1993? They beat both the C-2 and C-1 State Champions during the regular season, besting C-2 Sterling and beating C-1 Lincoln Christian not once, but twice.

*The C-2 All-Tournament Team was made up of 3 seniors and 2 juniors. Sargent placed seniors Chris Beran (6-4) and 6-0 Zane Young on the squad, while Sterling’s Scott Hesterman (5-9) filled the other senior slot. Republican Valley Junior Doug Liess (6-0) and junior counterpart Micah Uher of Sterling (6-2) completed the team.

*Tournament scoring honors went to Sterling’s Hestermann, who netted a 3 day total of 64 points (15, 23, 26), eleven points better than runner-up Zane Young of Sargent, who netted 53 in just 2 games, including 31 in a semifinal loss to Sterling.

*Scott Hestermann came to the rescue for the Jets in their finals matchup with Republican Valley. After holding a double digit lead most of the 3rd quarter, Rep Valley closed the gap to 7 points early in the 4th quarter. The 5-9 Hestermann then took over for Sterling, scoring 14 of his game high 26 points in the final 8 minutes to lift Brad Buller’s forces to a Class C-2 state championship.

*The C-1 All-Tournament Team was made up of one lone senior and 4 juniors. The senior was Neumann’s 61- Matt Meduna. The juniors included two from C-1 champion Hershey; Greg Bringewatt (6-3) and 5-6 Dustin Jorgenson. Runner-up Lincoln Christian also placed two and they were 5-11 Jonathon Beukelman and 6-3 Nate Vanek.

The C-1 tournament scoring crown easily went to Hershey’s Bringewatt, who netted 67 points (32, 8, 27). He outscored classmate Dustin Jorgenson, who had games of 8, 18 and 19 points for a total of 45.

*The Class B All-Tournament Team: Three Wahoo players made this baby and rightly so. Senior Joel Weyand (6-0) and juniors Travis Toline (6-4), and 6-1 Mike Hancock comprised 60% of the squad. Roncalli senior Jay Heller (6-3) and Cedar Catholic senior Eric Mueller (6-3) rounded out this elite group.

*The Tournament scoring king was Wahoo’s Mike Hancock, who compiled a 3 day total of 59 points. Teammate Travis Toline was 2nd with 49. Omaha Roncalli ace Eric Mueller played only one game but was a one man wrecking crew with his 37 big ones in the 67-64 loss to Crete.

*The All Class, All-Tournament Team: Three seniors, a junior and a sophomore made up the All-Class elite Tournament team in 1993. The seniors were Papillion La Vista’s Jon Ruff (5-11) and 6-5 Dave Teixeira plus Marion Pratt (6-2) of Omaha South. Kearney junior Jeff Larson (5-11) and O Burke’s fabulous sophomore Alvin Mitchell (5-11) complete the crew.

Tournament scoring honors went to Burke’s Mitchell, who rang up 56 points during his 3 day stay. High game of the Class A tournament went to Norfolk’s Brian Schram, who put up 31 point for Dave Oman’s Panthers in their 1st round 90-86 OT loss to Omaha Burke.
