By Bobby Mills (1000 Yard Guy)
*Adam Wasserman, Tanner Novotny, Jacob Johnson-Fairbury - This trio plus a host of other Jeffs pulled off one of the sweetest win in recent Fairbury gridiron history by defeating Ashland-Greenwood 21-20 last Friday.
Junior quarterback Adam Wasserman escaped from heavy pressure to nail Tanner Novotny with a game tying 35 yard TD strike with only 50 seconds remaining in the football game. Justin Peterson kicked the winning PAT, giving Fairbury the huge victory.
Wasserman also tossed scoring passes to Cayman DeBoer (40 Yards) and Patrick Ondrak (29 yards), finishing the game by connecting on 6 of 14 passes for 105 yards. The dual threat QB also carried the ball 17 times for 73 yards for the 5-1 Jeffs.
The injured Jacob Johnson also made his return to the field and contributed 74 yards on 18 touches. Johnson also had a nice 42 yard gain negated by a hold.
6-0, 175 pound senior LB Damian Green has his biggest night of the season on defense, leading the Jeffs with 11 tackles. 6-0, 185 pound defensive end Patrick Ondrak added 9 stops, including 2 for losses and a sack. Gigantic 285 pound DL Paul Mach also contributed 9 tackles. This is one dude you do not want to call a name and run.
Monumental win for Head Coach Kam Lenhart, who just graduated from Doane in 2014. The Jeffs also have a very manageable 3 remaining games to conclude the regular season, playing Southern (1-5), and a couple of 2-4 teams in Raymond Central and Milford-Dorchester.
*Trevor Nichelson-Ashland-Greenwood - The nearly unstoppable Nichelson still got his 100 yards in the 21-20 loss to Fairbury. The gliding, swivel-hipped Bluejay ran 25 times for 125 yards and caught a 7 yard scoring pass in the loss.
The Jeffs can be excused for letting Nichelson get a hundred rushing in the contest. Only 4 other teams have help the career 5,000 yard rusher to under a 100 yards in the past 26 games.
Right now, Trevor Nichelson's career rushing total stands at 5,760 yards. This moves Trevor into the No. 11 spot on the All-Time Career Rushing Yards List.
Honestly, I'm running out of words to describe how good this young man is when he gets a football in his hands. So incredible in open spaces and just terrific hips. Unreal.
*Alex Dubas-Cross County - The 5-7, 160 pound senior must have had it in his mind the Cougars were going to take Sutton down on at their own house.
Dubas did about everything a player could do to carry that out, coming up huge in Cross County's 26-14 win over then #2 and undefeated Sutton.
Alex had an unreal 15 solo tackles on defense to go along with his 9 assists. Yeah, that makes 24 folks.
On offense, Coach Ty Twarling must have decided it was time for Dubas to carry the football a little. Previously, Alex had rushed 5 times for 18 yards, only carrying the ball in two games. Against Sutton, Dubas toted the pigskin 13 times for 63 yards, caught 3 passes for 41 yards and notched 18 yards in kick returns.
Yes, he may have driven the bus home. I'll find out from Papa Steve on that one.
Alex Dubas is a demon in that defensive backfield for Cross County, logging 66 tackles in 6 games, 33 solos, 33 assists.
This is a dangerous football team, ask Sutton and Lutheran High Northeast about that one.
*Alex Wells-Holdrege - 5-10, 170 pound junior did his level best to keep the Dusters in the game against GI Northwest. Holdrege did end up losing a 36-35 heartbreaker to the Vikings from GI, but Wells bolted for 197 yards on a staggering 43 carries, scoring touchdowns runs covering 1, 17, 52 and 5 yards.
*Will Wagner and the Bison Defense - Central City - While the Central City defense was stifling Twin River to just 55 total yards, Wagner was a genuine dual-threat QB on the offensive side of things in the Bisons 54-0 shutout.
Wagner completed 14 of 22 passes for 175 yards and 3 TDs, but didn't stop there. The converted wide receiver-to quarterback rushed 14 times for another 171 yards and 2 more scores. Not a bad night for a former wide out.
Ethan DeBoer caught 2 TDs passes from Wagner in the rout, while junior Mikey Murray grabbed the other scoring pass.
That Bison "D" also recorded 5 sacks, including two by Division One recruit Jordan Paup, who is always more than thrilled to give his opponents a nice little greeting.
*Trey Sacks-Elkhorn - Bolted for 3rd quarter touchdown runs of 2 and 39 yards, giving the Antlers a needed lift after leading Waverly only 7-3 at the half.
The 5-9, 180 pound senior tailback ended the evening with 176 yards rushing and 3 TDs in Elkhorns 34-10 win over Waverly. That lifts Sacks season rushing total to 749 yards. Sacks big game arrives just in time for the #1 vs. #2 showdown this Friday with rival Elkhorn South.
The Antlers will be out to flip flop that rating when they face their in-town rival, Elkhorn South.
*Moses Bryant - Moses parted the Green Seas of Elkhorn in the Storm's 53-14 win over Seward. Bryant had rushing TDs of 2 and 7 yards coming within a minute of each other in the 1st quarter.
Moses then caught a 25 yard scoring pass from Cole Hanafan with 9 minutes left in the 2nd, then snared a 55 yard TD throw from Braden Wright 7 minutes later as Elkhorn South ran to a 47-0 halftime advantage.
Thus far in 2016, the two-time All-State, 1000 Yard Rusher has run for 681 yards and 13 TDs and caught 6 passes for 153 yards and 3 TDs. Bryant has also made 10 tackles on defense for Elkhorn South.
In just 2 and a half seasons, Moses Bryant has rushed for 3,048 yards and 48 touchdowns, caught 39 passes for 606 yards and 6 scores, accounted for 3,683 all-purpose yards (53 TDs), made 18 tackles and recovered 2 fumbles.
And maybe the most impressive stat of all is the fact Moses has fumbled only once in around 430 touches and not a lost fumble. That is simply amazing. I started at running back for 3 years for GICC and never fumbled one time but they couldn't strip the ball like they do today.
One time in 430 touches in this day and age? Moses not only parts The Green Seas, but holds onto the ball as well.
*Alex Rodgers-Omaha Roncalli - Pretty sure Schuyler will not want to see this 5-11, 165 pound sophomore QB again soon.
Rodgers did a little bit of everything in the Crimson Prides 55-21 shellacking of the Warriors. Alex rushed only 7 times in the lopsided win, but scored on three of those carries covering 8, 2 and 76 yards. Rodgers also tossed a 22 yard TD pass to Justin Niederklein and had a 34 yard Pick-6 to top it all off.
This young quarterback is lethal in that Roncalli shotgun, taking off downfield in a heartbeat with his great speed and cutting ability. Rodgers is also a very fine defender on defense with a nose for defending passes.
Mikal Robinson also made the most of his 5 carries in the Schuyler win, going off for 105 yards and a 49 yard TD scamper, plus a 49 yard punt return that went to the house.
*Grand Island Offense - That Islander offense was hitting on all cylinders in a 41-15 win over Millard South. 556 total yards to be exact.
Senior Tyler Kress hit 13 of his 17 passes for 298 yards and 2 touchdowns. Running back David Garcia ran 15 times for 120 yards a 3 scores, the receiving corps had 5 pass catchers with at least 30 yards and Kohlten Keezer made 11 tackles on defense, 7 of which were solo stops.
Kress and his 298 passing yards elevated his 6 game total to 1,111 yards, while Garcia moved his season rushing total to 546 yards and 8 TDs. Garcia, the 205 pounder, has been held under a hundred yards rushing only once in 5 games this fall.
The Islanders have remaining games with Lincoln Pius X, Bellevue East, and a big regular season closer with Lincoln SE at home October 21st.
**1000 Yard Passing Alert**
*Jake Hoatson-Shelby/Rising City - Sharpshooting QB destroyed Fillmore Central on the ground and through the air in the Huskies 61-0 trouncing of the Panthers.
Hoatson completed 14 of 19 passes for 233 yards and 4 touchdowns in the game plus had his first 100 yard rushing game of the season. Jake carried 18 times for 158 yards and a TD in the win. 391 yards of total offense is not a bad night for Hoatson, eh? He also made 9 tackles on defense.
So, for the season Jake Hoatson has completed 67% of his 137 passes for 1,022 yards, 7 touchdowns. The senior QB also has gained 431 yards on the ground and made 48 tackles for the 1-4 Huskies, whose 4 losses have all come from Top 10 Class C-2 teams.
*Trevor Brinkman-Syracuse - Completed 11 of 16 passes for 215 yards and 4 TDs in the Rockets 27-6 win over Louisville. The 5-8, 155 pound junior threw two TD tosses each to both Jake Heitkamp and Nate Hemje in the win.
Heitkamp, who caught 4 passes for 120 yards, hauled in TD receptions covering 36 and 43 yards. Hemje's TD catches covered 24 and 39 yards.
Trevor Brinkman has played quarterback in only 3 games for the Rockets, yet has hit 22 of 38 of his throws (58%) for 417 yards and 5 TDs. He has improved his yardage total each game at the position for 3-3 Syracuse.
*Tivon Phillips-Lincoln Northeast - Exploded for 255 yards on 30 carries and Five touchdowns in the Rockets 55-33 romp of the Fremont.
Phillips went in from 21, 16, 2, 2 and 10 yards out in the rout, increasing his season rushing total to 940 yards and 12 TDs.
I think Phillips could be the best back in Lincoln.
*Braeden Hartwig-Lincoln Southwest - 5-10, 190 pound senior may want to argue with my statement about Tivon Phillips after his game against North Platte last week.
Hartwig went off for 176 yards on 4 carries in the 1st quarter alone, as Southwest took off to a 27-0 lead on the Bulldogs.
The Silver Hawk RB ended the special night with 233 yards on 37 carries, hitting the end zone on runs of 90, 10, 2, and 40 yards. Hartwig, who has played in only 4 games this fall, upped his season rushing total to 365 yards.
*Jonah Micek-St. Edward - Quarterback and son of former All-State, 1000 yard rusher Casey Micek, completed 9 of 12 passes for a 101 yards and two TDs in the Beavers huge win over previously undefeated Walthill, 47-19.
Micek ran for a touchdown and caught a 22 yard pass from Evan Roberts for yet another score. Jonah also made 5 tackles in the win and also pirated a Walthill pass, his 3rd INT of the season.
The #2 Beavers meet No. 1 Riverside this Friday in a rematch of last years 6-Man State Championship game.
*Mark Thurston-Silver Lake - Big 185 pound junior ripped Maywood/Hayes Center for 270 yards on 21 carries and 3 TDs in the Mustangs 82-8 win over a young, undermanned Wolves squad.
Thurston, who increased his 5 game rushing total to 988 yards (12 TDs), also made 13 tackles on defense and recovered a fumble in the 6-Man matchup.
*Aquinas stable of Running Backs - Ron Mimick turned 'em loose against David City Public in the Monarchs 56-0 win over the Scouts.
Andy Lyons ran 5 times for 85 yards, scoring on runs of 30, 12 and 15 yards. Kyle Petree rushed 9 times for 72 bg ones and went in the end zone from 72 and 9 yards out while Spencer Maguire scored a couple of TDs with runs of 3 and 5 yards.
Aquinas went off for 402 yards of total offense in the game.
*Garris Karr-Arlington - How does 14 carries for 172 yards and 3 TDs grab ya? Karr was instrumental in Arlington's 41-21 win over Douglas County West last Friday.
Don't look now, but Garris Karr and his Arlington pals have compiled a 6-0 "under the radar" record this season. Karr has contributed 909 yards rushing this year, but both Jackson Borgmann and Sam Plugge have over 400 yards rushing apiece, and quarterback Andy Theiler can throw if he has to. The senior QB has only passed 42 times, yet piled up 459 yards and 7 TDs. Folks, that 24 yards every time Andy completes a throw.....letal.
Theiler's favorite target has to be Grant Miller, who has only 8 catches, but 5 have gone to the house.
This Eagle defense is only allowing around 200 total yards a contest, led by All-State candidate Brad Ernesti (47 Tackles), Seth McRobert and Braden Johnson (28 stops each) plus Grant Miller and Hayden Penny, who have 25 tackles each. The defense also has recovered 7 fumbles and recorded 9 sacks in 6 games.
This Arlington football team is going to be a really bad draw for some C-1 team come playoff time. This is a good football team.
