Sutton, Johnson pitch 34-0 shutout against Doniphan-Trumbull.
What a kick it must be for Sutton's Noah Johnson to run behind that fabulous offensive line in front of him. Many times it just takes a few seconds for that Mustang front 5 to hold the blocks that spring the state's leading rusher. But tonight, head Sutton head coach Steve Ramer decided to blast Johnson right into the heart of that D-T defense and the result was 238 yards on 32 grueling carries and a 34-0 victory for the visiting Mustangs.
And on the other side of the football, the story line was the stingy Sutton defense, swarming to the ball carrier in droves. That defense was so efficient it allowed only 157 yards of total offense all night, 99 of which came on the ground. Doniphan-Trumbull never penetrated past the Sutton 26 yard line all evening, with that coming on the final series of the game when reserves were in for both teams. The only offense the defending C-2 State Champions got going was through the air when sophomore quarterback Tate Mazour started hitting Noah Keller with a string of completions to end the 3rd quarter and begin the 4th.
It was the second straight shutout for the Mustangs and the 6th win of the season against no losses. And the ironic thing about the entire game was that the Doniphan-Trumbull defense actually kept Noach Johnson from escaping for a long run touchdown run until a 3rd quarter 33 yard TD burst.
Sutton hit the board first when they recovered a Tate Mazour fumble on the Cardinal 24 yard line. It took only 2 plays for the Mustangs to score with Noah Johnson carrying for 9, then blasting the final 15 for a tally with 23 seconds remaining in the 1st quarter.
Sutton scored again on their very next possession when they fashioned a 12 play, 6 minute 7 second drive that culminated with a 1 yard plunge by sophomore QB Tanner Peterson. But the next possesion by the Mustangs was a clinic on how to run a 2 minute drill without throwing a single pass.
After a 4th down and 2 pass fell incomplete for D-T, the Mustangs took over 56 yards away from the end zone. Beginning on their own 44 yard line with 2:44 left in the half, Doniphan-Trumbull knew very well what was coming.....a steady dose of Sutton's 195 senior, Noah Johnson. Number 22 toted the pigskin 8 of the next 10 plays and squeezed across a 1 yard touchdown run with just 13 seconds left in the half. How demoralizing that had to be for the Cardinals. Johnson gained 41 of the 56 yards on the alarmingly efficent, no passes drive. It was only fitting, and tiring for Noah Johnson, to scoot to the corner for the 2 point conversion. Sutton was up 22-0 at the break.
Sutton had a pretty nice drive in the 3rd quarter that began on their own 34 but was snuffed out by the Cardinals when wide receiver Nick Hohensee was stopped for a one yard loss at the D-T 15.
The Mustangs added 2 more scores in the 4th quarter. Johnson finally broke loose on a semi-long run when he shook loose several Doniphan-Trumbull tacklers on a 33 yard up-the-middle blast that perfectly displayed the talented running back's skills. On the next Cardinal possession, and three straight completions to Noah Keller, feisty junior Armando Ochsner pirated a Tate Mazour aerial at the Sutton 34 yard line.
Buoyed by a 33 yard Noah Johnson dash from that carried from the Mustang 42 to the Doniphan-Trumbull 25, Sutton put the final touches on the win with Johnson's last touchdown, a 1 yard run. It was Johnson's 4th TD on the evening and upped the count to 34-0, the final score.
For Sutton, it was the tackle-shedding, up the gut runs by Noah Johnson that earned him top rushing honors for the game, 238 yards on 32 carries. Sophomore QB Tanner Peterson added 50 yards on 13 touches that contributed to the Mustangs 323 yards rushing for the game. Sutton only attempted only 2 passes for no yards in the contest.
Doniphan-Trumbull could only muster 99 yards on the ground and was led by Jake Critel's 58 yards on 11 carries. Tate Mazour completed 8 of 18 passes for only 59 yards. Six of those throws were nabbed by Noah Keller, who totaled 55 yards receiving for the contest.
Both teams continue C-2, District 7 play next week. 6-0 Sutton will host a 4-2 Southern Valley team that was blitzed by Hastings St Cecilia tonight, 48-0. Doniphan-Trumbull will hit the road to Fairfield where they will face Sandy Creek. Both games are slated for Friday.
Sutton and St. Cecilia are headed to what is shaping up to be the District 7 championship match-up on October 17th in Sutton. Circle that baby on you calender. The Bluehawks won last year's game 21-14.
