Week 6 Friday Night Heroes:
Creighton running back Jacob Morrill etched his name deep in the Nebraska high school football history book Friday night. The 200 pound senior accomplished something many of us may never see in our lifetime. Yes, it was that special.
Morrill carried the ball only 8 times in the Bulldog's 74-12 win over Plainview, but his 156 yards elevated him to an elite status only 2 other backs in Nebraska high school football history have ever attained. Jacob Morrill's 156 yards elevated his season rushing total to 1,041 yards. Morrill became just the 3rd player ever to rush for over a 1000 yards in FOUR times in a career. Jacob's Friday total also upped his career rushing total to 5,085 yards and placed him in an elite group of 5000 yard rushers that numbers only 28. Morrill now currently ranks 26th out of 28 runners in history that have run for 5000 yards or more in a career with 2 regular season games to go in 2013. And with Creighton's football team currently undefeated, it appears Jacob Morrill may have some playoff games to pad that marvelous total.
Pretty difficult to top that one, but there are plenty of very fine performances that deserve a mention involving Week 6 games.
***1000 Yard Alert***
*Jordan Slough-Doniphan-Trumbull - Jordan "The WOW" Slough scooted for 209 yards on 22 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 7, 2 and 21 yards in the Cardinals huge 34-30 win over Sutton. Slough increased his season rushing total to 1,121 yards. This young man is just incredible to watch. On his 21 yard TD run, Slough disappeared into the heart of the Sutton line for a few moments, then blasted out and was off to the races. D-T has their next stern test of the year when they entertain St. Cecilia next Friday.
*Garrett Poppen-Giltner - Big, powerful 219 pounder ripped through Pleasanton for 188 yds on 13 carries and 3 touchdowns. Giltner coasted 64-26 as Poppen increased his 2013 rushing total to 830 yards.
*Arlie Myers-Omaha Brownell-Talbot - 140 back had149 yards on just 14 carries in a 41-7 win vs. Palmyra. Myers scored on runs of 96, 6 and 5 yards to help B-T stay unbeaten while increasing his season rushing total to 943.
*Calvin Strong-Omaha North - Another typical "Strong" outing in the Papillion La Vista 41-14 win for the Vikings. After being held to 67 first half yards, Calvin ended the night with 191 yards on 33 carries and TD runs of 1, 41 and 4 yards. Yes, Strong leads Class A with 1,683 yards. Huskers DO have their eyes on this fabulous junior..........don't they? Kid reminds me so much of Darren Sproles.
*Noah Lazzaro-Lincoln Southwest - Seemed to come out of nowhere to gain 138 yards on 26 touches in the Silver Hawks 21-10 win over injury riddled Norfolk. Lazzaro is anything but "under the radar" on defense though. The 6-1, 210 pound strong safety junior has D-1 potential.....and that's a fact. 66 tackles from his safety slot a year ago. Not good to have your safety make that many stops, but..........
*Rugby Miller-Bayard - Another first name of the year nominee, Miller rushed for 135 yards on 27 carries and scored on a 22 yard run in Bayard's heartbreaking 28-26 double overtime loss to Bridgeport.
*Wyatt Pankowski-Bridgeport - The 6-3, 204 pound sophomore ran the ball 30 times for 174 yards and scored on short runs of 1 and 3 yards in the Bayard win. Pankowski now has 796 yards in 2013.
*Chance Anglin and Logan Lewis-Sidney - The Red Raider Rippers were at it again in Sidney's wild 52-42 win over Alliance. Anglin carried 23 times for 193 yards and 3 Tds. Lewis added 139 yards on 26 carries and also scored 3 times. Lewis increased his season total to 1,189 yards while Anglin edged ever so close that thousand yard mark with a 2013 total of 979 yards.
*Jake "The Snake" Paulsen-Cozad - His 131 yards on 27 carries were critical in Cozad's 27-20 overtime win over #3 Cozad. Paulsen slipped in the end zone from 1 yard out and padded his season rushing total to 939.
***1000 Yard Alert***
*Buzz Niederklein-Adams Central - Another big night for Niederklein as he ran 26 times for 246 yards and 4 touchdowns in the Patriots 45-6 stomping of Minden. Buzz is now a 1000 yard man with 1,179 big ones. Honestly, I wonder if any team in C-1 can hold this kid to under a 100 yards?
*1000 Yard Alert***
*Keshawn Camacho, Jordan Heinrichs and Tyler Brown-Henderson Heartland - Against a fine McCool Junction team that knows how to tackle, FB Camacho rambled for 142 yards on 22 touches and scored TD runs of 1 and 7 yards. QB Heinrichs ran 24 times for 132 yards and ran it in from 11 yards out. Tyler Brown went over the 1000 yard mark (1,042 yds) with his 103 yds on 15 touches. Brown scored on runs of 6 and 13 yards and caught 2 TD passes. This Huskie squad is going to cause someone major headaches in the playoffs.
*Nate Gray-Battle Creek - 185 pound senior had a big day in the Braves 36-13 win against a good Hartington Cedar Catholic team. Gray ran for 156 yds on 25 carries and hit pay dirt form 25 and 17 yards out. This Battle Creek is making a go of it in that brutal C-2 District 6. Gray now has 986 yards this fall.
*Brandon Pick-Plattsmouth - A 1000 yard runner a year ago, Pick carried 30 times for 143 yards and had a 5 yard scoring run in the Blue Devils 28-0 "W" over Platteview. Pick's 2013 rushing total is now 849. Tough, tough runner.
*John Dehne and Collin Heath-Weeping Water - Dehne ran for 159 yds on 18 carries, scored on 30 and 18 runs in the Indians 41-6 win over Conestoga. Heath caught all 7 passes that were attempted in the game, good for 132 yards and a 25 yard TD in the mix.
*Makiah Slade-Lincoln NE - Speed merchant keyed a furious Rocket comeback with touchdown runs of 48, 40 and 65 yards. Slade ended up with 169 yards on 25 carries in the 23-22 nail biter win over Pius X. The real heroes of the game were lineman Nate Reddick and D.J. Kennedy, who pressured Pius QB Zach Petitt into an incompletion on a 2 point conversion with 33 seconds left in the game. Slade has now run for 681 yards this season.
*Josh Langmeier-Wahoo - Langmeier came up huge in the Warriors 30-29 win over rival Wahoo Neumann. Josh ran the ball 21 times for 151 yards and scored on dashes of 43 and 20 yards and recorded a Pick 6 from 26 yards out. *Logan Powers and Leighton Chicoine-Lincoln Christian - Even without the services of all-state RB/LB candidate Ben Plambeck (leg injury), Christian obliterated Lincoln Lutheran 65-14. The Crusaders turned to the passing game as Powers completed 15 of 17 tosses for 31 yards and 6 TDs. Powers also ran 3 times for 79 yards including a 71 yard TD jaunt. Chicoine caught 7 of Powers aerials for 160 yards and TD receptions of 13, 4, 66 and 44 yards. Crusaders bolted to a 52-7 halftime lead and never looked back, grabbing the Spirit Sword for another year.
*Jessup Workman-Beatrice - Big junior sparkled even in a 24-20 loss to Norris. Workman ran 42 times for 258 yards and scored on the Orangeman's first play (65 run). Workman also logged 10 tackles on defense and increased his 2013 rushing total to and even-steven 1,300 yards.

*James Sluka-Exeter-Milligan - Finally had a few carries in a game this season and responded with 140 yds on 12 touches and scored on runs of 33 and 46 yards and retuned a punt 43 yards for another. Exeter-Milligan trounced a very good Freeman team 68-14.......oh my.

*J.J. Oltmer-Humphrey St. Francis - Bulldozing junior carried 28 times for 192 yards and had TD blasts of 7 and 6 yds in the Flyers 34-20 win over a nice Scribner-Snyder. Been a while since Scribby has been good.

Ty rushed for 153 yards on 18 carries and scored form 12, 13 and 20 yards out in the 'Cats 42-12 win over big rival Gering. Benson increases his season rushing total to 886.
