Week 1 High School football Heroes.
*Jake Paulsen-Cozad - Kicked off his senior season with a dazzling 276 yards on 19 carries, including a highlight reel 90 TD run that put 'em in the aisles. Jake the Snake also scored on a 46 run, 3 yard blast and caught a 61 yard TD pass from Nate Bubak. The Haymakers beat Adams Central 34-14.
*Buzz Neiderklien-Adams Central - Gained 197 tough up-the-middle yards on 27 carries against Cozad. Neiderklein flashed his speed early on a slick 84 yard run that gave the Patriots an early 7-6 lead. This kid is faster than you think and one heck of a force on defense.
*Alex Allen-Grand Island Central Catholic - Tore Minden's pass defense to shreds by completing 24 of 34 passes for an unofficial 435 yards and 6 scores. Wide receiver buddies Brady Brokaw and Jackson Tynan had 149 and 117 yards respectively with 5 receptions each. Crusaders scored 34 second half points to drill the Whippets 54-19.
*Logan Gier-Omaha Burke - Gained 164 yards on 17 carries and scored on runs of 66, 37 yards and returned a kick-off 90 yards for another score. Bulldogs bested Omaha Central 35-21. Gier has 262 yards in 2 games.
*Nick Stolze and Shaka Taylor-Lutheran High NE - Stolze rambled for 198 yds on 25 carries and scored on runs of 16 and 13 yards. Stoltz also caught a 15 yard TD pass. Taylor, the QB, rushed for 126-23 carries and scored on runs of 12 and 4 yards out as the Eagles beat Fremont Bergan 47-34 in a battle of C-2 toughies.
*Caden Weverka-Arapahoe - Rangy quarterback rushed for 187 yards on only 17 tries and scored on 70, 1 and 3 yard runs. Weverka also tossed a 19 yard TD pass in a 42-18 win over Maxwell.
*Mark Jarecke-Columbus Lakeview - Touched the ball 4 times and scored 4 times in Lakeviews 77-6 trouncing of Fairbury. The fleet Jarecke reached paydirt on runs of 62 and 15 yards, caught a 32 TD pass from Jack Shadley and returned a kick 79 yards for a 4th TD. Nice (short) nights work.
*Chris Wenzl-Sterling - 6-0, 190 pound back did his level best to help the Jets beat Freeman by rushing 213 yards on 33 carries. Wenzl scored on runs of 1, 20, and 33 yards, but Sterling lost 42-36 in the rivalry game.
*Jacob Buhr and Isaac Frerichs-Freeman - These 2 juniors got the job done against Sterling. Buhr gained 124 yards on 22 touches and scored on runs of 33 and 14 yards. Quarterback Frerichs ran for 149-14 carries and scored on runs of 19 and 40 yards.
*Mitch Sanders-David City - The 5-11, 185 successor to Austin Havelina blasted his way for 209 yards on 30 carries and scored touchdowns on runs 81 and 9 yards then broke Fillmore Central's back by returning a kick-off 99 yards for a TD. Scouts won 35-12 to even their record at 1-1.
*Luke Erickson-Osceola - Sophomore quarterback had 128-30 carries and scored 5 touchdowns against D-2's second rated Fullerton team. Erickson also passed for 2 more scores in the 58-40 loss.
*Trent Hayes-Lincoln SE - New signal caller for the Knights was an efficient 10 of 13 passing for 216 yards and connected on TD strikes of 82, 5, 16 and 43 yards in a 38-0 pasting of Lincoln High.
*Calvin Strong-Omaha North - Division 1 prospect ripped through Omaha South's "D" for 157-22 carries and scored 4 times. The junior stand-out, who is probably the best back in Nebraska, has already rushed for 414 yards in 2 outings.
*Logan Lewis and Chance Anglin-Sidney - Dynamic duo did it again last week against Holdrege. Lewis blasted for 146 yds on 35 carries and scored twice. Anglin rushed for 119 yds on 21 tries. Lewis has run for 413 yards in 2 contests while Anglin has 353. Pretty sweet considering the fact the Red Raiders have had only two 1000 yard runners in their history (Jason Bartling-1,252/1993 and Scott Volkmer-1,088/2004).
*Austin Schnitzler and Trevor Burr-Kenesaw - Schnitzler rambled for 309 yards on 29 carries and scored 4 Tds. Burr gained 153 yards on 9 carries and scored twice. Kenesaw romped right? WRONG. *Hayden Cahoy-Overton - Ran for 191 yards on only 9 carries (21/per) in limited action as Overton beat Sutherland 69-22. Cahoy has 350 rushing yards and 7 TDS in 2 games.

Jacob Morrill-Creighton - Splendid Senior, who is after his FOURTH 1000 yard rushing season, ran for 182 yds on 8 carries as the Bulldogs spanked Clearwater-Orchard 74-6. 818 and counting Jacob!
*Josh Langemeier-Wahoo - Filling the shoes of the great Tyler Kavan, Langemeier rushed for 165-19 tries against Boys Town. The 5-10, 180 pound senior has 254 yards in 2 games. Wahoo won 28-6.
*Nate Gray-Battle Creek - Gray, who just missed a 1000 a year ago rushed for 188-12 carries and scored three times as the Braves beat Laurel-Concord/Coleridge 39-0. Gray has 275 yards in 2 games.
*Tyler Brown-Henderson Heartland - Laid the wood to Shelby with his 261 yards on only 15 carries. The 5-9, 160 junior scored 3 TDs and averaged 17.4 yards as pop as the boys in Crimson beat up on Shelby 70-30.
*Collin Pieper-North Platte St. Pats - Gained 109-23 carries and scored 4 times in a lightening delayed 28-14 win over Bridgeport. Pieper has 254 yards in 2 outings for the Irish.
*Quote of the Week: "It was a typical Aquinas game, when we play well we don't give opportunities for other teams to win."
-Ron Mimick-David City Aquinas head coach (in reference to a 21-0 win over Columbus Scotus)
.............and you know what? With a 27 game win streak and storied history, I believe every word Coach Mimick says. One of the greats for sure. Sure fire cinch for the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame. Coach Mimick is one of my true heroes.
