Week Zero's shining gridiron stars.
Just one week of high school football in the books and already there are some outstanding performers. Many teams are not slated to open until this week, so I can only imagine how many greats will emerge after this Friday's match-ups.
Let's get right to it high school football fans. Week Zero and it's stars:
Athlete-of-the-Week:
*Alex Brehmer-Lyons-Decatur NE - Brehmer, starting his fourth season at quarterback for the Cougars, put together the best game of his career in a 64-50 win over Spalding/Spalding Academy.
The 5-11, 155 pound senior rushed for 389 yards on 28 carries and completed 10 of 13 passes for 111 yards and 2 scores. How does 13.89 yards a carry grab you?
*Ben Plambeck-Lincoln Christian - Rushed for 148 yards on 28 carries (131-26 in 1st half) and was a force on defense as the Crusaders blasted Boys Town 48-16.
*Ross Drwal and the entire Millard West team - The slick QB and his Wildcats disposed of a top notch Lincoln SE team in grand style, 38-6.
*Cole Wiseman and Noah Johnson-Sutton - Wiseman ran for 200 yards on just 6 carries and Johnson rushed for 152 yards as the Mustangs overwhelmed Tri-County 52-19. Wiseman scored touchdowns from 86, 76 and 22 yards out and Johnson scored on 24, 75 and 5 yard runs.
*Drew Klein-Papillion La Vista South - Was nearly unstoppable as the Titans avenged last years loss to rival Papillion LV by outscoring the Monarchs 44-34. Klein rambled for 197 yards on 38 carries and scored from 1 and 47 yard runs and returned a 91 yards for another TD.
*Alex Ditoro-Papillion LV - Despite suffering 6 interceptions (had 3 the entire season a year ago) and losing the game, Ditoro still completed 27 of 48 passes for 402 yards and 4 TDs.
*Logan Lewis and Chance Anglin- Sidney - RB tandem ripped GI Northwest for 501 rushing between them in a Red Raider 44-22 win. Lewis exploded for 267 yards on 37 totes and scored on 20, 94 and 1 yard runs. Anglin ran for 234 yards on 24 carries and scored on runs of 12, 9 and 55 yards. GINW is only the second Nebraska team Sidney has beaten the past 2 seasons, but things are looking good for the Red Raiders in 2013......very good.
*Jackson Love-Norfolk Catholic - Senior 1000 yard rusher sparkled in a Catholic 31-27 win over Columbus Lakeview in a battle of Class C-1 heavyweights last Thursday in Norfolk. Love carried 28 times for 232 yards and scored touchdowns on runs of 3, 50 and 54 yards. The 54 yard run was the game clincher late in the money quarter.
*Jack Shadley and Mark Jarecke-Columbus Lakeview - Shadley rushed for 104-16 carries and scored on a 31 yard run and completed 14-31 passes for 172 yards in the Norfolk Catholic loss.
Jarecke, a 3 year track star, was a demon on defense and seemed to be in on every tackle or pass break-up.
*Calvin Strong-Omaha North - Spectacular RB started where he left off last year as a super sophomore. The all-state runner rushed for 257 yards on only 14 carries and scored 4 times as the Vikings shut out Omaha Benson 48-0.
*Austin Schnitzler and Trevor Burr-Kenesaw - QB/RB duo led the Blue Devils to an exiting 56-42 win over a vastly improved Pleasanton team. Schnitzler, who missed almost all of 2012, ran for 219 yds on 28 touches and QB Trevor Burr, taking over for graduated star Tyler Schnitzler, ran for 209 yards on 24 carries and scored 5 Tds.
*Linden Kaliff and Evan Neville-York - Kaliff completed 11-15 passes for 232 yards a score. Neville ground out 119 tough up-the-gut yards on 20 carries and a TD in the Dukes impressive 35-9 win over pre-season #1 Norris.
*Ty Benson-Scottsbluff - 5-9, 150 pound junior ran for an impressive 170 big ones on 26 carries in the 'Bluffs 15-7 win at Lexington Friday. Benson scored on a 3 yard run.
*Dylan Roberg-Randolph - 190 pound senior 1000 yard rusher punished Elgin/Pope John with 190 yards on only 11 carries. Roberg, who was under the weather, ran 74 yards for a TD on the 1st scrimmage play and later scored on a 37 yard run. The Cardinals halted a 26 game Elgin/Pope John win streak. Incidentally Roberg goes by "Mr. Roberg".
*Blake Schrage-Elgin/Pope John - Ran for 140-27 carries and had a 1 yd. TD run in the loss to Randolph.
*Trevor Mann, Cody Warren and Troy Lusk-Brady - These 3 muskateers helped Brady rally from a 22-6 third quarter defecit to beat rival Maxwell 36-22. Mann was 16 of 24 passing for 173 yards and 2 scores. Mann also scored on runs of 16, 11, and 7 runs and tosssed a 24 yd TD pass to Lusk.
Warren gained 135 yards on 18 carries and Lusk had 127 yards receiving. By the way, Mann had a hand in 24 of the 30 fourth quarter points.
*DeAngelo Peaks/Mitch Wynne-Omaha Northwest - Quarterback Peak rushed for 254-20 carries and scored on 19, 55, and 82 yard runs in the Huskies 47-30 win over Lincoln High. Wynne ran for 143-24 carries and scooted 34 yards for a score.
*Yohanna Shokai-Lincoln High - Swivel-hipped, slashing back blasted for 250 yards on 28 tries against ONW and scored from 60, 22, and 4 yards out. Shokai is a dandy, friends.
*Easton Stick-Creighton Prep - D-1 prospect burned Omaha Burke by rushing for 120 yards on just FOUR carries as Prep bested the 'Dogs 25-7. Stick's TD came on a 47 run.
*Logan Gier-Omaha Burke - The very fine Burke runner rushed for 125-27 carries in the Prep loss. Expect Gier to be a thousand yard rusher this season.
Brad Brazeal-Bellevue West - Converted 3 year receiver completed 17 of 26 passes for a whopping 268 yds and 4 touchdowns (51, 18, 3 and 8 yards) in his maiden voyage at QB. His favorite receiver was C.J. Johnson who hauled in 6 passes for 158 yards and snared TD catches of 18 and 8 yards. The Thunderbirds beat arch-rival Bell. East 41-13 in the season opener.
*Stevin Horrocks-Hay Springs - This here is a man anong boys don't cha see. The 6-1, 225 pound FB/LB steamrolled Morrill with 198 yards and TD runs of 7, 11, and 65 yards in a 44-8 win. Horrocks moved from Omaha to Hay Springs in the 5th grade and has adapted rather well wouldn't you say?
*Gage Smith-Gering - His team lost to Holdrege 21-12, but Smith still rushed for 162 yards on 25 tries, intercepted a pass, and kicked 2 field goals, one of which was 43 yards. Smith ran for 849 yards a season ago for the Bulldogs. Live around my neck of the woods? Smith and Gering will play @ Hastings October 14th. Kid is worth watching, I promise.
*Taryn Ostransky-Cody-Kilgore - Ran for 210 yards on 20 carries as his 6-Man team blasted Wauneta-Palisade 39-0. Taryn rushed for 1,290 yards a season ago.
*Wyatt Pankowski-Bridgeport - 6-3, 204 pound Sophomore back ran for 137 on 14 carries and scored 3 touchdowns in a 54-14 win over Dundy County/Stratton.
*Javier Guerrero-Minatare - Guerrero, a junior, ran for 214 yards on only 15 carries and scored on runs of 22 and 49 yards and caught a 24 yard TD pass.....all in the 4th quarter. Minatare came up on the short end of a 58-41 score in a loss to Sioux County.
*Nathan Woodrum-Sioux County - QB threw for 345 yards and connected on scoring strikes of 43, 31, 24, 25, and 20 yards. Woodrum also found the end zone on a 6 yd run.
*Caden Weverka-Arapahoe - QB rushed for 142 yards and scored from 5, 17, and 19 yards out in a lightening shortened 34-6 win over Franklin. The game was called with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
*Hayden Cahoy-Overton - 6-0, 190 pound all-state candidate ran for 159 yards on only 15 carries as the Eagles ran over Stapleton/MC 51-6. Cahoy scored 3 times in the easy win.
.....there may be additions later in the week so stay tuned.
....and....Thursday we'll take in the Thursday C-1 heavyweight match-up between Adams Central and Cozad at the home of the Haymakers. Haven't figured Friday's game yet. Any suggestions?
