It Begins ... Again
The national "liberal" media would have you believe that the government shut down can be blamed on both sides of the political spectrum, but that is just plain hogwash. The current incantation of the Republican Party has been looking for a way to shut down the federal government and they finally found that way, the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. As October 1 neared, the date that parts of the government would be shut down if Congress did not agree on funding, TEA Party Republicans held their party hostage and would not allow and clean resolutions pass. No, they demanded that any resolution that would keep the government running include defunding Obamacare.
Apparently these people do not believe in laws or elections. Like it or not Obamacare WAS passed by Congress, signed by the President, and confirmed by the Supreme Court. That is ALL three branches, this is the law of the land. The American people, if as opposed to this law as the Right wants us to believe, do not want anything to do with the law they would have not only put Republicans in charge of both houses of Congress in 2012 they would have voted out Obama. This did not happen. There is a reason we have elections, but the TEA Party faction does not seem to care about laws or elections and continue to attempt run arounds on both.
Republicans want you to believe that is fully the fault of the President and the Congressional Democrats. Let us look at the facts, though. This whole shutdown came from House Republicans. It was them who continued putting the Obamacare defunding measures in the bills to fund the government. I continually voted to pass the bills on to the Senate. Even Republican Senators were growing tired with the political ploy, and the Senate would strip out of the Obamacare amendments and send back a clean funding bill back to the House, who would then put back in the Amendments. Though, Obama threatened to veto any bill that made it to his desk that defunded Obamacare, not a single bill made it to his desk. The fault clearly solely belongs to House Republicans.
When Senator John McCain comes out as one of voices of reason against his own party members you know this political circus has gotten out of hand.
Oh, but this circus shows no signs of winding down anytime soon. Within hours of shutting down the government we see Michele Bachmann, one of the darlings of the TEA Party standing in front of memorials (that had been shut down thanks, in part, to her smiling, posing for pictures, tweeting, and fully blaming the shutdown on Obama and the Democrats. She was not done though, she went a step further claiming that Obama and the Democrats were using Vets as some sort of political ploy; all while she was standing in front of closed memorials, smiling, taking pictures, and tweeting. This woman actually attempted to run for president.
Republicans have tried this before, twice in fact. In the 1990s after taking control of Congress they shut down the government twice trying to weaken President Clinton. Instead, he was re-elected and Republicans lost control of Congress.
Just to show how lying and misleading is not only treacherous but dangerous, recent polling has showing that close to 50% of Americans support the Affordable Care Act while around 30% support Obamacare. The fact that they are one in the same shows how lies and misinformation can shape the public debate.
