Prediction for the Remainder of Congressional Year
Now that Brown has won the Senate seat in Massachusetts the Democrats have lost their super majority in the Senate. Before I get into my prediction I just have to bring something up to the Conservatives on here about some of the quotes that have come out of the race and the Senator you are so proud of. Since the election there have been several people quoted as saying for the first time in my life I am proud of Massachusetts. Now I have nothing against people saying that but it does call to mind when the future first lady made the comment that for the first time in her adult life she was proud to be American. At the time far righters went ballistic over that comment. Yet in a win for the far right the comment about Massachusetts is perfectly acceptable. Explain to me the difference?
I also wonder how the party of 9/11 feels that their new golden boy while in the MA Congress was one of only three people to vote against giving EMS teams that went to help in the days after 9/11 extra time off.
Now Brown ran a decent campaign. It helped that he was featured nightly on Fox News, but Coakley and the Democrats ran a horrid campaign. They assumed that whatever Democrat they put in the race that candidate would win. Apparently they decided to put the weakest possible candidate in. After Coakley won her primary she took time away from the campaign, Brown never stopped running.
Now, to my prediction. With Democrats losing the seemingly filibuster 60 person majority dropping down to 59, Republicans will now filibuster every single bill that comes before the Senate and be able to hold that filibuster for extremely long periods of time. Don't believe me? In December they filibustered an extension to money going to the military that would help the military continue fighting two wars. That 60th vote by the Democrats was the only thing that got money to the military.
Republicans will effectively shut town the federal government heading into an election year. Now here's where the Democrats have a chance to not only keep their 59 seats and large majority in the House but regain the super-majority in November. Remind the people that are going to be voting that it was Republicans that stopped the government, stopped any progress being made on ending the recession. but Republicans have an ace up their sleeves and for whatever reason Democrats are to scared to call Republicans on it. Republicans have turned lying to their voters not only into a winning formula but an art form. If the Republicans are allowed to go on television every day of every week and absolutely lie unchallenged they will win the majority in the Senate in November.
History is on the side of the Republicans. In recent years whenever the president and Congress are of the same party in the midterm election the majority party always loses at least one majority (and typically the Senate). It happened to Bush twice (2002 and 2006), so the Republicans picking up a majority in one of the houses won't be a surprise. Don't expect a complete turn around in the House, Republicans should be able to narrow the gap but I believe the margin between Democrats and Republican is too large to overcome. It also doesn't help that more Republican representatives have either announced retirement or running for another office than Democrats.
My next plan blog is the outrageous by comical lie that the far right has concocted to not only label Obama a liberal but label his policies Obamunism combining his name with Communism. As anyone that knows anything about Communism will point out this comparison is not only ridiculous but just plain goofy.
